While looking at the networks tab in firefox I noticed that LET is loading ALOT of analytical data about all you LET readers out there, and I just wanted to fill you in on it. I Feel bad for all the BuySellAd advertisers on the side as they are trying their best, but the other stuff you should know about.

As you can see there are a ton. Don't believe me? Look for yourself! All of these websites know that you personally visit this site and then display ads on other websites that relate to your browsing habits. This gives colocrossing more money. So remember folks use that ad blocker!

They are no different from the rest of the Internet, there is usually plenty of tracking on most of the popular websites and no one seems to be alarmed.

I mean, ads are going to be around. A lot of this is about analytics and making sure that I receive ads that are relevant to my tastes. Now, given that I would freely answer anyone who asked what websites I visit each day, and that I'm going to end up seeing ads, how does it harm me for them to be more relevant? I'm thrilled that I don't log on to facebook and see viagra ads, but instead ads for apps and companies that interest me. In fact, I often learn about new and interesting products this way. It's how I learned about Uber and saved a ton in NYC, it's how I learned about GrubHub and fell in love with random local Chinese food restaurants, it's how I found Boxed and got that case of Red Bull on my door step for $35. I love relevant advertising :)

For anyone who doesn't feel this way, surely they already run adblocker. Just my 2c. I'll sleep fine tonight with this news :)

I run adblock and ghostery and this site is just fine. That said, I always feel a little conflicted because of that. Sure, a lot of sites I don't care about and I don't care what happens to them, but this one I do care about.

BTW this is all the more reason to use vpsboard.com

It has cool features we always wanted here like:

    SSL
    An owner that cares
Ads are run inhouse so no outside tracking
    Better forum software
    Less hate

Works really well if you ask me.

@jar summed up pretty much what i was going to say.. i much rather see ads pertaining to my interest than something random like lose weight etc..

and if CC makes a commision based on my purchases then all the better. I know some of that will go towards the betterment of LET, like how I'm able to browse LET even thought we are being DDoSed.. I'm sure all that costs money.

We work hard to keep LEB/LET online. Our efforts aren't perfect, but when considering the intense effort made by the attackers we're doing ok. SysAdmin (Alex) has spent plenty of Friday nights and Sunday mornings working diligently to keep things online. As you mentioned, there is significant costs associated with defending against such traffic.

At some point in 2015 we would like to bring the adserving in-house because BSA is taking a whopping 25% right now. The more we save, the more we can spend reinvesting into more authors, ddos protection capabilities, promos and gifts for the community, etc.

There is this one thing I don't like about the forum software: It's so wasteful with space. You can tell me now to use an external monitor, but this is how I look at websites most of the time.

    LET space for original post:
    image

    VPSBoard space for original post:

    LET comments in thread:

    VPSBoard comments in thread:

Look how much space is wasted for avatars and the space it creates below a post :(

Even after blocking avatars you have to scroll a lot:

Actually I think from a usability point of view LET is better. There are general discussion threads I wouldn't read in VPSBoard because I wouldn't click into sub-forums (I would only be in the offer section and spend all my money :D). What I do like about VPSBoard is, that it doesn't seem like a business yet. LET/LEB sometimes feels a little bit too successful, but still is a lot more fun for me personally than any other board at the moment.

I'm really happy with the culture that Maarten and the rest of the moderators have created on LET. Especially the last few months LET has become a really great community with a good feel.

    Just my 2 cents!

Please! Can I get a pocket lamp when you have the funds?
It could even be an unmanaged one without batteries:

Someone on reddit did an AMA a couple years ago about selling used socks.

"Ew" is the only word that occurred to me. But who knows, some guys have very special tastes... So maybe I shouldn't have blamed Ad Exchanges or RTB themselves, it's likely all sellers' fault.

Back to the topic, I'm always using ABP in FF, however seems that none of the Ads on LET/LEB can be blocked. It's not very annoying while I'm using PC, however, whenever I open the sites with some pads, pages stuck and it sucks.

  • Adblocking is working fine in Chrome :)

Sometimes I disable filtering and click on LET/other forum advertisement so they can earn some money.

The community can get filled with drama, but at least it's fun. The staff on the other hand are great. Compare LET staff to the giant circlejerk at WHT (have you seen what bear does? LOL) and the staff here at LET literally look like angels sent from heaven for some divine moderating or something.

    Disconnect, disconnect's 30 connections related to AD's.
So maybe a bit more as these listed.

    SSL

SSL is not magic cure. For usual website there are no need to support (and especially force) HTTPS. Using vulnerability in SSL (https) libraries, it's possible not just to decrypt the traffic, but to hack server itself. Some vulnerabilities you heard about which lets you read some zones of server's memory is not the end, it just some public ones. There are plenty of vulnerabilities which allows an attacker to make a dump of entire memory. And what more important - 3rd party services (like ads) do not support HTTPS usually, which make HTTPS "not possible to use".

SSL is vpsboard.com (alphassl) is one of the worse i know. Such cheap certificates is more like false-security.

    An owner that cares

My personal opinion, is that when owner "cares too much", he makes a sucks website. Passionate, but moderate; plodding, but knows how to balance his time - this is the best recipe.

If you talk about uptime, i think owner is not the main here.

Ads are run inhouse so no outside tracking

I would suggest LET to use Google Ads as it most probably will give more income.. Inhouse ads requires many advertisers which LET don't really have. Google system is not ideal, but it works well enough. Number of trackers in Google Ads is rather little. They have rules.

    Better forum software

IPB is not better than vanilla.

    Less hate

I found myself LET to be much more adequate than most other discussion websites.

Please don't. If the ads were in-house I wouldn't mind seeing them around and maybe occasionally click any interesting ones, but linked with any of the large companies that track users across sessions is a complete turn-off (pun unintended).

  • jbilohjbiloh Administrator, Veteran

One of the advantages of inhouse/BSA ads is that all the advertisers are specific to what LEB/LET is about. Personally I don't mind seeing what advertisers are offering because its all pertinent to what this community is.

  • Does that have billing and what not in it?

  • SysAdmin said: Does that have billing and what not in it?

    Yeah with plugins http://www.reviveadservermod.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?p=1&q=billing

  • @SysAdmin @jbiloh 5 min of googling I have found a ton while you guys have been looking for months for one

    http://www.clippersoft.net/features/

  • Just going to leave this here.. https://chrismatic.io/ublock/

But I wouldn't stress too much about the tracking stuff. You're going to get it everywhere. If you're super paranoid you should be using something like NoScript to prevent any JS from running.
