Well I can install most Windows 2000 drivers and XP drivers I needed. And you can run Oracle 8-10 on it. I'm not into gaming so I've no experience about that. But for the tasks I would use Windows for, Reactos does serve its purpose (Office, Coding, etc.). And that even though it's still in alpha state.

I've been a BeOS user back in the days for some time and therefore I'm also quite interested in Haiku. Last time I tried it, it worked quite fine. But I've no software that I regularly use that will run on BeOS.

  • @Kylix this isn't a porn or warez site. Please use a real link.

  • @drmike That tinyurl forwards to http://lmgtfy.com/?q=haiku+os

I remember your comment you blamed people for posting long lines would damage the layout in your browser. Hence, I tried to make a shorter link. Maybe you should post a AUP for others how to behave on the Internet when they are near you. ;-)

Just did a bit of testing myself... and tried to push it to run on 64 MB RAM

    And It works well !

    Now, 32 MB RAM xD

    1st Try :

    2nd Try :

Well, Looks like 64 MB is the best it can be pushed down to ! Still, amazing for an OS which can run Windows Applications directly.

Note : This test included only the booting of the OS, no apps were installed or run during the test.

  • LOL! They even copied the kernel panic output screen. That's hilarious.

Even their website does that. Try visiting any non-existing page:

  • Cool!

    Lol, now that's funny.

  • ok i finnaly got some time to play with it, loaded iso on my kvm, installed reactOS fine, everything works fine except network :/

about haiku, i load iso but system loops - boots to welcome screen and resets

  • I heard ReactOS is more secure and faster then Windows itself. It makes Microsoft look dumb.

  • Security is a concept, reliant entirely upon the admin/user. I have a single machine with Windows installed (gaming only), and I can guarantee it's a helluva lot more secure than plenty of nix servers out there that have unpatched vulnerabilities.

  • oh and btw, visual basic 6 programs are not working under reactOS which really kills it for me ;(

  • @kristal: You need to install the VB6-Runtime. Windows just comes pre-packed with them. It's the same as with the .net-Framework which needed to be installed manually on Win XP.

  • @kylix: yes, i do install it, yet still, it doesnt work

@kristal: AFAIK DirectX is currently not supported by ReactOS. Maybe your VB6-Apps make use of it. Others than that, VB6-Apps should run quite fine as far as I've heard. Of course taking into consideration, that those Apps don't rely on specific Windows API-calls or any other special code.

  • im installing vb6 from the reactOS application manager, it installs fine but when im trying to load a simple app ( no directx) it says vb6 not found, i googled it but didnt find anything really useful.

  • your bot?

  • haha something new play and check out for fun... not bad for an alpha release.

  • I think I'll never move on to try ReactOS..I'll stay with my good ol' wine on Linux :D

  • @livingvirtual: i would do the same BUT 2 things:

    1. not all aplications can be run on wine, and i do not enjoy using alternatives

    2. if u r using LowMemBox-es every megabyte of ram is important and heres where reactos wins again

  • @kristal
Well for my server..I don't use many WIndows Applications so I don't need a specfic operating system to run a Windows Based Apps. And where it comes to memory I definetely am not going to install Windows Applications on my Linux Box as I am only using it to do some geeky stuff, run some web-sites etc.. ReactOS may be a perfect solution for a netbook/desktop but where it comes to servers..I don't think there is going to be a vast implementation.
