Plex Server Config

I am looking for a solution to setting up a plex server. A dedicated server in a software raid would probably cost more than $50 and that is too much for me to pay. I am wondering if Hubic is any good. They offer 10TB for $10. And if I had a VPS I could mount the space and use that for plex. If there is a better alternative please let me know.

  • I run mine on a Kimsufi (i5, 1TB drive) ~$22 with samba shares on another Kimsufi (Atom, 500GB) ~$5.50 in the same DC to extend storage. Works quite well.

Not sure how good hubic will be.. but yes if you can find a good VPS that allows you to fully utilize the cpu, you can mount external storage. Probably want at least 2GB of ram.

The I3 from Kimsufi makes an excellent Plex server. I'm assuming some encoding so that's why I'm not saying an Atom box. Background encoding and simultaneous streaming with the I3 I never had a problem.

Didn't quickpacket hook you up with a killer 4x1TB deal in a previous thread of yours? What's wrong with that machine?

Transcoding depends a lot on the input files and where you're playing it - as long as you're not going from like 1080p files transcoded to 720p for streaming, and stick with h/x264 files, streaming should be all direct play/direct stream on most most devices (web, tablet/phone, chromecast, etc).

  • Read this https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201774043
    Special attention:

Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark scores are a good guideline for a requirement:

    1080p/10Mbps: 2000 PassMark
    720p/4Mbps: 1500 PassMark

I am getting very bad peering and like to stream large files. So it isn't ideal if it freezes every few seconds.

Look at the hetzner serverboerse if you are ok with Germany as location.

Hubic via hubicfuse does not work very well because all content is somehow prebuffered and I couldn't finde a way to make it work without.

Yeah and I know you will pay much more than with hubic but nothing is better than a nice dedicated machine with plex if you really want to use it at it's full capacity.

However if it is for personal use without the need to be able to do simultaneous streaming with friends and family (which I like very much) and share media than you can perfectly go with kimsufi.

I have one of the old n2800 dual core machines with 500gb (ovh, not kimsufi brand) which I got very cheap and it was perfect for personal streaming. Could even handle one full transcode on 1080p. It will expire in two days and I am not sure if I will let it expire because of my better machine with hetzner.

  • I can get 2TB of storage on a vps for pretty cheap, then I could use that and mount the storage to another vps for plex, would that work out well?

Mind telling where you buy a cheap 2TB storage vps?

We can offer 2TB NFS for $40/month (Grow and shrink as needed) RAID6

Located in OVH's Roubaix DC, you can couple this with any of OVH's RBX servers and you have a decent server with tons of storage.

Though sometimes the CPU cries out for me to stop the torment, the kimsufi n2800 works for my personal streams. Even for 1080>720p streaming.

I have a Plex server on one of Crissics $15/year promos. 100gb storage which is fine for streaming over mobile network and wireless.

He does. @MSPNick has the exact same servers in the UK for £8/mo or US with @MarkTurner for $10/mo

AFAIK marks has a 100GB disk and nicks has 160GB disk.

I have a atom from nick and he even let me send some extra ram off amazon down so mine has 3GB you can even send your own HDD.

    Hey thanks for the mention!

Yup. I provide the base system. If you want to upgrade it, it's still the same price £8/mo. (With your own config shipped to us)

  • @ATHK - Yes there are a few left

@TinyTunnel_Tom - we don't let customers ship equipment to augment our provided equipment. This just leads to headaches all round for example when customer provided equipment fails, or causes our equipment to fail; or end of contract the headache of having to maintain ownership information, etc. Easier for us to just say, our equipment, our headache. Whatever breaks is our responsibility to replace/repair.

How large is the hard drive on it?

  • ATHKATHK Member

100GB, probably not enough for a media server but they're cheap.. and in the US.

    Use Kimsufi/Online.net for storage.
Mount them with NFS to your VPS.
Install Plex Media Server, point the mounted directory.

And you have a good system. You don't even need your VPS provider to allow torrenting. (:

  • How much storage are you after?

How well would it operate? Like if I wanted to download using the vps, to the mounted storage. And then have it unrar the files and move the file for streaming with plex.

Obviously it'll be way slower and stupid to do such a task at the NFS connected VPS.
You need to do such tasks at the host machine. Why do you have them in RAR format anyway...

What I recommended is a solution to use your vps/dedi with better cpu to put in good use. No need to complicate things.

We could do something for you @ https://zxplay.co.uk , we specialise in Plex Hosting, providing the full experience and not just the storage to mount else where. Depending on your budget.

However as you earlier said about Hubic, I've seen people have good speeds when using inside of OVH, but not speeds required for smooth playback/transcoding of media to an external location.
