Atlantic.net $0.99 VPS - How does it hold up?

Hello,

A while ago some threads about the cheap $0.99/m atlantic.net vps deal popped up on LET, obviously there was alot of interest.

Now i'm wondering how it has been doing for everyone so far? what is your experience with this deal? worth it? - i'm considering to jump in too but i first like to see some recent feedback from LET.

Thank you!

  • I've had mine since the end of September in Toronto (Canada-East location). Currently I'm sitting at 49 days uptime, I can't remember if that was me updating & restarting or not.. but it probably was me.

No real issues, other than the network in Toronto isn't that hot.. it's gigabit, but only in name. 25-35 mbps up/down to the east coast of NA, 15-25mbps to the west coast, 10mbps to europe (avg) - sometimes 20mbps to western europe. It's pretty consistent and those are avg upload and download. Can get 400+mbps on a cachefly test file though :P

DD shows ~80MB/s seq. write - which is more than usable for most tasks.

Decent results, dirt cheap for KVM.

  • Have one in Toronto, works like a charm as an encrypted btsync-node since 8 weeks. Average speed ~15 mbit to Germany

  • onkel said: an encrypted btsync-node

Did you follow any tutorial on this? Would be an interesting experiment to work over the weekend.

  • never succeed to get one. my card was rejected and they asked for verification document. i was using my bank debit card cause i dont have cc

  • Tried a few days ago to get one but I couldn't signup always get error "We are sorry. A server error occured while processing your signup request. Plese try again later."

  • Is the offer still up?

  • Still no PayPal support or EU location :(

  • I think it's pretty amazing for the price, uptime has been wonderful (100% for me during the past few months), disk speed is great, and well there's not much else to say besides it's a damn good deal for $0.99/month.

It's great. They were even friendly when I got hit with an unexpected DDOS. Because seriously, why go for name servers? That was douchey even for a skid.

Would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Seems to be the new way to go, in recent attacks they hit the main servers then realised it wasn't going down so chased NS stuff.

  • Been using it for a few months now with no known downtime. The only 'catch' with the $0.99 plan is that you can only have one such VPS on your account.

Excessive (and I do mean excessive) bandwidth is billed much like Amazon AWS does it.

  • Hi Everyone:

Our $0.99 VPS is a labor of love, its really to get the price point low so people can learn, experiment, and tinker with new technologies or learn programming/server-admin which is clearly the future. I promise we're not getting rich billing you monthly USD $0.99! (And that even has RAID, and per second billing!!)

Anyway, we are working hard & fast on introducing new features. Some new stuff went live today, and we've got some more releases in the coming weeks. We launched San Francisco in December, and donated our first month of revenue to helping the homeless of San Francisco. We can do this because we're passionate about what we're doing, we're not venture funded, and we're not look for a quick exit.

Because we are focused on customer experience, we try to make the experience better for our customers. For example, we offer RAID standard on our servers, per second billing, upgraded controllers on our newer nodes. We also put more SSDs than most providers in their servers, to give a better experience. We bill in arrears meaning we take credit risk and don't make you prepay anything (we don't bill you until you've actually used the service). We don't make big deal about these things because over time all these little differences will add up to make a much better experience in the end. But it gives you the idea of our mindset, we really want our customers to trust us so they can relax and know what they are paying and not worry about surprise charges or hidden fees or any of the stuff traditional companies in Telecom or Cable do. Happy customers, even at $0.99/mo, is our highest calling.

In term of geographies, we've already got our first batches of IPs for Europe & Asia. Europe was slowed down with the new VAT Tax rules. I am really excited not about just the standard locations, but putting nodes in countries that haven't been deployed to yet.
We need to get more people online, more people involved making things, so we can see more big things happen faster.

We are not venture-funded, and have been in business 21 years. I started this business when I was 20, and we have managed to change from our origins as a dialup provider in the mid 1990s. We're passionate about what we're doing and trying to change world. (Hey, at least we're ambitious, right?)

If you think about humanity, the only way mankind made progress was yearning for BETTER, not cheaper. The world economy has been in this race to the bottom of cheaper at all cost, and where has that gotten us? Our overarching goal is to do BETTER.

We're trying hard and working to improve our product everyday. I'm sure we'll screw up or something will break at some point (it always does); but we're doing our best to give you a top shelf product.

If you like what we're up to, we would appreciate if you could spread the word about us by blogging, tweeting, and posting letting people know we exist. If you can use our product at work, consider talking to the person in charge about moving your servers to us. We're also establishing a brand ambassador program for people who are really into us which would give you sneak peeks to new features, and give you a voice in the direction of our product (if you're interested in this than PM me, its a new program that we are still setting up).

Thanks everyone! I hope you're excited for us and cheer for us as we try and take on the big dogs and create a really beautiful product. We live in a jaded world; but there have to be people who are looking for the connection and romance that comes with working with people who are genuinely passionate about the actual technology rather than just looking to raise another round of funding. We're hoping our product eventually helps lead to medical break throughs, helps design spaceships that send people to Mars, and generally seeing more of the future faster, because we got this technology in the hands of tomorrows Einsteins today.

    Cheers,

    -mp

Mine was solid when I was using it as a VPN. I tried the Silicon Valley location, but I didn't care for the performance compared to their Dallas location. I love them a lot though. :)

  • So far it looks like the $0.99 vps is outperforming its price tag. I'll give it a shot.

  • Mine has had 100% uptime as well, love it. And @mp99e99 that was simply excellent to read. Thanks for everything :)

  • Obviously the feedback is overwhelmingly positive, and for what you get at $.99 cents a month, it's deservedly so. I'd say it's definitely worth trying out and seeing how your experience goes. Not a huge financial risk :)
