@OpaqueRegistrant said: How come when I search Novogara, it brings up forum posts saying it's the best place for various kinds of shady activities, but you don't allow Tor exits which are the least shady shady activities?

tl;dr they're a "bulletproof" provider that, after being in the spotlight too many times, renamed and rebranded. They used to be called Ecatal and were pretty famous. They're still very lenient but not as much as they used to be. I suspect they're just trying to appear more legit, but of course we know the truth. :D

Not that we mind of course.

I wasn't calling tor illegal or shady. I replied to a post literally talking about "10G of abusive traffic" and claiming that "any Ecatel reseller won't care."

Privacy, Tor, and freedom of speech within the law are one thing. Deliberately looking for a provider because you expect them not to care about abuse is something else entirely..

If your definition of "bulletproof" is that we don't unplug a customer every time somebody sends an abuse email, then sure, call it whatever makes you happy. But knowingly facilitating illegal or abusive activity? No.

And at least get the history right before explaining "the truth" about our own company to us.

This is something everyone knows. Novogara is shady, just not as much as when it was Ecatel.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Volume

IP Volume (also known as Ecatel, Quasi Networks, and Novogara) is a hosting company associated with bulletproof hosting services. It has been subject to multiple law enforcement investigations and public scrutiny for hosting [long list of crimes].

We've got lots of shady providers here so I'm not gonna judge what people use your infra for, but you can't act innocent. :D

I never said Novogara had no relation to Ecatel, so I am not sure what you're trying to prove here.

And “everybody knows” followed by a Wikipedia link isn't evidence. Wikipedia itself doesn't claim that everything written there is factually true; its content is based on verifiability through published sources. Those are really two very different things. That particular article contains plenty of inaccuracies, speculation and assumptions presented as facts.

I could write something about you on the Internet tomorrow and cite it somewhere. That still wouldn't magically make it true..

Anyway, none of this changes what I actually said: we don't knowingly accept or facilitate illegal or abusive activity. Thats all i actually wanted to mention in this topic.

Well law enforcement and threat attribution companies seem to agree that you're shady/"bulletproof".

Most bulletproof and quasi-bulletproof hosts don't. They're just less proactive and make it easy for people to sign back up. I don't doubt that you (and really any bulletproof host) would terminate a client if you received a court order to.

If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but if I am then it's a very common, if not nearly universal, misunderstanding.

That's actually the part that tends to get left out of these stories.

We were investigated because of exactly these allegations.

The investigation did not establish that we were operating a bulletproof hosting service or facilitating criminal activity. Quite the opposite came out: despite the reputation and allegations, there was no finding that we were doing what we were being accused of and we were actually handling serious abuse very well.

The allegations were repeated everywhere. That outcome somehow never seems to get repeated with the same enthusiasm. :)

Apparently, correcting the record is less interesting than creating it in this world.

  • @NovogaraNL said: Apparently, correcting the record is less interesting than creating it in this world.

That's fair enough. I don't have enough motivation to dig deep enough to see how true it is, but I would not be surprised if you're right. The world does thrive on outrage and doesn't care as much about positive outcomes.

I am your customer. Since ecatel times. But i would never use my name.
My abuse is worse than OP and you forward (some) and we ignore them (or lie to you that its solved) never was a problem. You dont care in reality, only on paper.

But if you dont want OP M247 definitely will.

If not, any Russia ISP will if you block Russian IPs, 100% guaranteed or i pay your hosting.

That's an interesting claim, considering Novogara works almost exclusively through resellers.

So no, I have no idea who you are or through which reseller you supposedly use our infrastructure.

But the rest is even more interesting: you're saying you deliberately ignore abuse reports and lie to your provider that the issue has been resolved.

If we genuinely "don't care", why exactly would you need to lie about resolving it?

The deal since ecatel is that we reply and you dont continue investigating while we shuffle the use to a new IP.

I can point you 15 IPTV sites in your network, but all behind CF of course (we are behind Alibaba) so work tonfind them from your side.

    Also 3 200TB+ scene FTPs.

  • William, the story seems to grow every time one part of it is challenged. :)

Let's keep it simple: you are not our customer, and this supposed “deal since Ecatel” does not exist and never has.

I'm not going to play whack-a-mole with every new claim you introduce.

    Dear William!

I apologize for jumping in, but I didn't quite understand the point about Russian providers. What exactly do they do or not do, and what makes them good or bad? It's not really clear from the context. I'm personally interested in this as well.

  • Russian police does not investigate websites it cant open due to IP ban.

  • @William said: Russian police does not investigate websites it cant open due to IP ban.

About 98% of abuse-related issues are handled at the company level between providers, customers, and their staff. We're talking about hosting and network traffic here, so how exactly is this connected to the police, unless we're talking about drug trafficking, of course, lol?

  • Instead of arguing, let's enjoy a happy song — from the ages of HostSolutions and iHostArt.

I don't hate them. I think it's important that a few reputable "shady" hosts exist for the sake of free speech. I just don't like them playing innocent.

yea they stopped allowing tor exits due to spamhaus being on their ass and having spamhaus labeling whole subnets as bad.

You'd think Spamhaus would have a special rule for Tor exits. Most blocklist providers do, so they list all Tor exits, and automatically delist them when they are no longer Tor exits. There should be no need to list a whole subnet just because it has a lot of Tor exits.

But this is hardly the first stupid thing Spamhaus has done to the Internet.

But this is hardly the first stupid thing Spamhaus has done to the Internet.

If they actually cared about making the world a better place and not being the self-appointed judges of IP morals, then they would. AbuseIPDB for example says This address is a Tor exit node. Neither the owner nor the provider are directly behind the offending action., while still listing it as having a 100% abuse score. And as soon as it stops being an exit, it very rapidly adjusts the overall score as no new reports come in, and the risk score quickly settles back to 0. That's the way to do it.

Meanwhile, Spamhaus prefers to punish individual providers for "allowing abuse".
