MXroute Disses DirectAdmin

Email I just got:

Apologies to customers that are unware of our previous panel, DirectAdmin. If you've never used DirectAdmin (and you would know, it's horrible), you can ignore this email.

Horrible?

They go more into it here: https://blog.mxroute.com/ripping-off-bandages

I've never been a fan of any hosting panel but I didn't think DirectAdmin was horrible when I've used it.

It isn't great but it is at least a billion times better than cpanel whm

possibly it sucks harder as an email hosting panel

  • Compared to virtualmin and ispconfig, going to directadmin is like going from sticks and stones to 20th century implements. For $5/month and two sites, it's a bargain. MXRoute needed to build something in-house -- but that's expensive.

The major sticking point to me is they're building it all in house with AI. I don't doubt jar's skills, but they're replacing DirectAdmin, HostBill and CrossBox. It's not an easy task.
I'm not convinced and think it'll lead to more chaos down the line. I very much would like to be proven wrong.

DirectAdmin is a great panel, even I use it for my main sites. Probably one of the best to use for your own stuff. Clearly using it to offer commercial email services is going to bottleneck you in more than one way. It's one reason I never tried offering a "real" public email service, it needs a custom solution to do it properly.

You can do a lot as a competent person using AI dev tools really. I plan to replace my game panel with a custom one so I have much more flexibility and better features. It all comes down to the people using it. I think Jar deciding to using a custom solution is going to be great long term.

  • All is fair in love and email.

  • Good luck then.

I didn't see him go into detail. He's modding it for another purpose, it's going to break and he'll have to fix it.

    This is hardly "news".

cPanel and DirectAdmin break all the time now with updates. Sometimes an update is one step forward (yay, a bug fix or vuln patch!) and two steps backwards (woops, we broke IMAP or letsencrypt doesn't work now!)

He's not the only one using AI assistance to build bespoke stacks for his needs. I don't get the AI hate personally... He's competent enough to do more than just say, "Claude build a suite of email hosting tools and make no mistakes" and isn't stupid enough to risk an established business on a rushed migration to an untested in-house stack.

It's a bit different than some random host writing a new VPS panel in two weeks and rushing it into production.
