RackNerd never changes.

RackNerd never changes—always making life difficult for customers. I had actually forgotten about this server; I’ve been paying for it via auto-renewal for over five years. I decided to use it and requested an additional IP, but the company just makes things difficult for customers.

He's probably an employee, not the boss, so he can't make decisions. Even if he were the boss, there are many things that need to be regulated in a company.

You could escalate the request or consult a superior.

    What is even the context?
What is even the full story?
Why post just a screenshot but not explain what your actual issue is?
The staff member is just doing what they can and they don't get to make the calls.

    This is tiring...

This sort of inflexibility is a major reason to avoid annual billing.

You only need to read the image to understand the entire context.
Regarding the annual paid server: the IP address cannot be billed on a prorated basis aligned with the server renewal date; this avoids having to pay for the IP in one month and the server in another.

If they never change, why are you doing business with them? Quit whining and move your business to someone else who will do what you want them to do.

@dustinc fire this guy already. :D

That will be the next step if the problem isn't resolved—since I was paying for the service but couldn't use it due to these complications.

Yeah I don’t see the issue still, and this is coming from a books/accounting perspective.

Sure it’s annoying for you, but the screenshot is cutting off what appears to be more of the explanation that was given. If you can’t accept that then I dunno… change hosts? You haven’t used whatever you have for years and now decide to… you’re just annoyed that they won’t pro rata an addon that was likely clearly marked annually and not monthly or on a prorated basis.

I think you should have asked before you pulled the trigger… even an adjustment can be made, I still fail to see how this is RackNerd’s problem.

  • zedzed Member

that does seem kinda wacko that they wouldn't prorate an addon service to line up the annual billing, i wonder if it's a miscommunication of some sort.

he wouldn't have this problem—since, in any case, I can't request it via the dashboard; they would have to create the invoice and perform the service manually, rather than using auto-deployment.

    Context I can see

You forgot about the server for a while (appears to be a few years)
Suddenly decide to use the server
Ask for an extra IP, advised these are paid annually and you will be billed for the annual amount

You actually want a different rule applying to you because you had the server 5 years, they advised its policy they are paid annually, you are angry and create a thread to apply pressure for them to do what you want, If I was Racknerd, I would refund your last payment and tell you go to another provider, this type of pressure tactic is nothing more than a kid being told no more sweets and throwing a strop.

The extra ip as built could be completely transferable from 1 vps to another.

We just don’t know enough because it was left out and only RackNerd can speak about it.

Or, hear me out here, maybe you are a customer that makes things difficult for companies?

Seriously, if you want an additional service just pay the invoice! I do not know how much Racknerd charges for an extra ip but we are probably not talking about a lot of dollars, and you expect them to manually go in and change the way their systems bill things and risking to break some automation, just to make it more convenient for you? And we are not even talking about a big inconvenience here, you said you are already using auto-renewal on the server and even forgot about it, how hard would it be for you to do exactly the same with this service?

Hi @lexandri -- I’m showing that our team did update your ticket with some additional context and more specific reasoning behind the policy.

In short, as many providers operating at scale here can probably agree, annual billing for additional IPs is one "indirect" method of helping keep bad actors down. At $12/year per IPv4, its generally not a significant hurdle for someone with a legitimate long-term use case, but it can add enough friction to discourage certain forms of short-term abuse. Of course, it will not stop every bad actor, and there are other things too which we will not disclose on a public forum, but for example, someone intending to obtain an IP, blast spam for a few weeks, dirty it up, and disappear may think twice when faced with a full 12-month commitment upfront for the addon.

It is just one of those things you learn after years of operating a larger scale provider. Some companies take a more blanket approach, such as blocking outbound port 25 entirely. Which by the way, we do not. As such, allowing more flexibility in one area often has to go hand in hand with other standard operating procedures designed to protect our IP space and maintain a reliable platform for everyone.

There are other business related considerations involved too, such as capacity planning and predictability, though abuse prevention is the primary reason behind this particular SOP.

With that being said, we are always all ears and working on ways to better balance customer convenience with abuse prevention. We have no interest in creating unnecessary bureaucracy or friction, so wherever we can safely offer flexibility, we will.

By the time I got to seeing this thread and reviewing your ticket, I already see that the ticket was ultimately handled for you several hours ago in a satisfactory manner. We sincerely appreciate your many years of business with RackNerd :) Feel free to reach out to me anytime at [email protected] if I can ever assist with anything else.

I am pretty sure that if you cancel the server the addon will be cancelled too, and any eventual credit will be refunded.

Fuck these people who buy things that don't fit their needs and it's the provider's fault. They're the worst.

Yes, I am bored of seeing threads every now and then accusing providers. If a business does not meet your needs, change to something else because they have a policy in place which works for them.
