People, as far as I'm aware, @UltraVPS have never done "double-bandwidth" offers, and this for at least two reasons: one, they don't need to; and two, they don't need to

(And this is good :) )

The price remains the same upon renewal.

Additionly, I reinstall the vps with netboot[dot]xyz, I found that the 200GB space was not allocated directly, maybe it was in a ZFS storage pool, so I formatted it as ext4 and manually mounted it to /data.
Now I'm not sure if I need to do sudo tune2fs -m 0 /dev/vdb to free up the ext4 reserved space.

haha, I have too many questions, please forgive my stupidity :)

Our VPS come with two disc. One system disc and a second disc with the ordered disc space. You may use "mount --bind" to mount folders onto another disc. Or you change the mounting point from i.e. /home to the second disc. Or you use one of our many boot images to perform a manual installation and install a LVM to have one single partition.

I understand, I just meant that they are the stereotypical German company: reliable but very inflexible and weird processes (weird virtualization, weird disk setup, weird billing...).

But a great, reliable hoster with great deals.

I know what you mean hah (German relatives as well), I appreciate the courtesy regardless.
I'm usually of the mindset that asking once is almost always OK, then take it from there. I know this is LET and shit but while I most definitely want free stuff I don't expect free stuff :)

Why is the hard drive listed as a 200GB HDD when I purchased the 25Y-Special-2? Is there some error?

  • hkbbdxhkbbdx Member
    edited March 27

    Hello,

I tested the /data disk on my server and would like to confirm the actual storage type.

    Test results:

    โ€ข 1 GiB direct write: 200 MB/s
    โ€ข 4K random read: 40.7k IOPS, 159 MiB/s
    โ€ข 4K random write: 33.0k IOPS, 129 MiB/s
โ€ข Average latency: around 0.8โ€“1.0 ms

These results do not look like a typical HDD. They look much closer to SSD/NVMe-class virtualized storage.

However, inside the system, lsblk reports the disk with:

    โ€ข ROTA=1

So I would like to ask:

    1. What is the actual underlying storage type for this 200 GB disk?

    โ€ข HDD?
    โ€ข SSD?
    โ€ข NVMe?

    1. If it is SSD/NVMe-based storage, why is it exposed to the guest OS as ROTA=1?
    2. Is this expected behavior because of the virtualization/storage layer (for example bhyve/ZFS abstraction)?

Please confirm the real storage type and whether the ROTA=1 flag is only a virtual-device reporting issue.

    Thanks.

@zejjnt Maybe someone else should preach? I do like the BSDs, but I also like Linux too!

If some provider gives me a free dedicated server with a few IPv4s and IPv6, I probably might try putting BSD on it and giving away free virtual machines for a while. . . . I want to learn a little about the BSD hypervisors. . . . Awhile back we had about 50 users on an Ubuntu dedi running virt-install and cloud-init. That was fun!

Hope you are doing great! Best wishes! <3

I'm pretty certain that they do work, but since the provider doesn't offer DHCP, you would need to specify the static network settings manually, and this can be slightly challenging with installation ISOs -- especially netboot.xyz -- that by default assume that DHCP is available to set the network

Okay, it wasn't clear why you thought that the Debian ISO and netboot.xyz didn't work

Admittedly, I haven't tried either of these ISOs at this provider for a long time

Their templates work well, but -- yes -- a template for Debian 13 isn't yet available, which is why I asked about it around seven comments above :)

@UltraVPS Your terms disturb me slightly:

The customer obligates himself not to use the services made available by the provider for the spreading of illegal or immoral information or for other abusive purposes
