Hello I’m Leo. A personal vps user.
I would be absolutely thrilled to utilize it! I would want to run on it: to run minor, automated tasks or scripts that assist in my operational efficiency or data processing.
Examples Simple Cron Jobs For scheduled data fetches or cleanups. And maybe to securely store and synchronize configuration files, scripts, and any critical data necessary for my operations, ensuring redundancy and accessibility. I might use something like Nextcloud for a more comprehensive personal cloud solution, or simply use rsync over SSH for secure file transfers and backups.

    Best wish!

  • Hi @Not_Oles can you restart my vps, i might have crashed my vps since i can't ssh into my server since i was tinkering around with my docker-compose.yml file and ig it ate up the ram preventing me from doing anything in the terminal. Thanks

  • I did some testing so

    • Downloading from google drive caps you between 200-600 KB/s
    • Used Windscribe (LA Proxy AS9009) i was able to get 10.2-10.7 MB/s
I'm guessing the peering between the vps and google is way to far or out of reach it's slow
I did add 8GB swap to my server and i was able to run more tabs with memory going to swap. Did ran a speed test on fast.com and speedtest.com and got normal speeds (70-95Mbps download and upload) this was al done through the browser (neko through brave)

@Fubukibox According to top process 45505 still is running about 100% processor utilization. Is it okay to reboot your VPS? If not, what else do you suggest? thanks!

Oh, im running neko atm but i can turn it off right now. It's fine since i can reboot my vps but other then that the server is running fine. It's just a docker issue i had a few hours before almost crashed the entire vps when testing around my docker-compose.yml (the container that runs neko) file that i managed to fix with swap memory. Other then that, im p much good. I don't need to reboot now but when i do i will just reboot the vps myself. Thank you

  • Good stuff, support it, can it be used as a monitoring machine?

  • Not_OlesNot_Oles Member, Patron Provider

@Fubukibox Thanks for your reply! top on the node tells me that your VPS has stopped running 100% processor. Now it's moving every few seconds between about 40% and about 10%. I think this CPU usage is okay, especially because everybody else's VPSes are pretty quiet. If I see the sustained 100% usage again, I will let you know. Best wishes!

@etotakeo Hi! Yes a few guys are using their VPSes to run monitors. Too bad there aren't any more of this server's VPSes to be given out. Maybe some provider will give me another server before too long, and so there might be more free VPSes. Thanks again to @fmxm for this nice server! Best wishes!

    Hi,

I would use the VPS to set up an NTP server to contribute to the NTP Pool project. I found that a personal instance with just one core and 1GB memory was getting overwhelmed by 6Mbit/s peak traffic in the US zone.

Also, I would run a RIPE Atlas probe to support Internet traffic research.

A third application would be non-public head-less screen-snapping in support of monitoring the NTP server function.

I also would like to run a Snowflake proxy for the Tor project.

Apart from those specific tasks, I would use the resources for any day-to-day tasks and projects that require a host exposed to the Internet, e.g., test new versions of NTP software and proposed patches. E.g., I would be curious to get rs-ntpd with its NTPv5 capability up and running and use it for testing and experimenting (my current nodes are either multi-homed, or get their time from a local reference clock, neither of which is currently supported by rs-ntpd).

I'm curious, how many queries per second was your 1 core vps getting? (The one with 6 Mbit/s peak traffic)

    @kkwwll

Thanks for the information you posted. I am unaware of any problems specifically associated with any of the scripts you mentioned.

What I was seeing on the Node, though, was a processor running at 100% for an hour, and that processor was being used by your VPS.

Do any of those scripts typically run longer than one hour?

I think, when there is an issue, something should be done, because, if a second issue occurs, then the two issues together might be a disaster. That's why I "pre-emptively" stopped your VPS.

I don't see running a processor at 100% for a little while as an issue worth mentioning. But people who want to do something like compile for several hours ought to post here so we know what's happening. Same with high network or high file I/O.

I restarted your VPS. CPU usage seems minimal. But, when you get back in, and if you rerun the test scripts, please check to make sure there is no "stuck" process causing continuous high CPU output. That's happened to me.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience! Good luck!

    Best wishes!

    Tom

    Great news!

The server has been renewed until September 9. Also, it might be renewed until October 9 at the lastest, but we are not yet sure what will happen after September 9.

Thanks to @fmxm for his wonderful donation and for the renewal!

Please note that all the VPSes on this thread's server already are allocated. But there will be other VPSes coming up soon. Please see https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/207877/fossvps-org-is-born/p1
