Whats the point of paying one year in advance?

stefemanstefeman Member

Cheaper price, sure. but given how many providers are going down or having issues, I find it pure lunacy to not just setup automatic monthly payments instead. Not to mention things happening where you miss one abuse mail and lose your deposit like with cloudcone.

Do you prefer to pay monthly or yearly? I wish more providers would have "Commitment" like OVHCloud which do not require yearly payment all at once but still has the same pricing.

Real KYC is the only way that commitments/contracts can be enforceable, so smaller providers would end up losing a lot more business because you'd be a lot more eery about handing your ID to multiple small providers to be able to pay monthly. People choose OVH because they are the cheapest/safest and there are no alternates at that price for a company that won't go out of business the next day (and then agree to KYC when needed).

  • I usually prefer to pay yearly simply because I hate monthly payments. Maybe if you have a few servers with the same provider paying monthly is fine. Otherwise, it is difficult.

I’ll pay one year in advance for reputable providers like @hosthatch and @labze, or if the amount isn’t too large (< $50/yr). You have to remember that the discount upfront comes from two places: (1) reduced processing fees (one transaction instead of 12) and (2) being able to invest your money into their business now instead of taking on debt or waiting until they have enough cash on hand.

For newer or less-established providers, the max is quarterly so that I remain within the chargeback window in case funny things (including deadpooling) happen.

OVH is hit or miss as they don’t always give a discount for paying a year upfront. My KS-GAME-LE has no discount, so that remains on monthly. Why do I want to pay in advance and give them an interest-free loan?

Paid 2-3 years in advance for @hosthatch services because they are reputable and I get 2x resource upgrades.
Edit: it's also cheaper. Their 24 GB NVMe plan if paid monthly is $10/month, or a total of $120/yr. If paid anually it is $115/yr. If paid 2 years it is $200/2 years or $100/yr and you get a bunch of resource upgrade.

how to pay monthly for a $7/year deal?

  • a2razora2razor Member

    I prefer yearly personally.

Yet I also don't like signing up yearly from the getgo unless I trust a provider. So ... if I'm getting into a yearly commitment, it usually either means there's a too good to pass promo or I trust them with my business.

Both of which are good honestly.

I prefer yearly as long as the amount is < $1000 or so. It's just easier to do a one-time payment and know that stuff will work for a year.
It would not kill me if I lost the money so any deadpooling is a calculated risk.

When it is under $20 a year and have good specs/perf why the hell not.

Monthly to do big ass Ryzen servers or even RTO/LTO dedis.

You need KYP. Know Your Provider procedure. This means deep penetration into the company, doxing, knowing their suppliers (datacenters, network carriers). When you know that, you can make educated guess of possible deadpool. Take into account reviews, public opinion. And there you go.

I prefer monthly if the price isn’t much more, but often there’s a big difference or it’s not an option at all. For cheaper plans but it’s less of an issue.

Yearly but I'm usually picky about who I give money to. The only recent burn I can think of is MassiveSHIT and they aren't dead yet they're just horrible.

edit: I think I lost about a month of my 2nd year of WootHosting, after AlphaRacks "acquired" them. I signed up 7/2017, AlphaRacks came into it 4/2019 and died 5/2019 (was it really that short, lol). So I lost 2 months I guess.

Paying monthly mean i have to pay gateway fee + card convert fee + transaction fee so it way expensive compare to yearly.
Paypal fee ~1.5% + Card Currency Convert ~5% + Fixed Transaction fee 1%(or 0.5$ if lower, free if over 100$) + 10% VAT
    So example if i do 10$ monthly i have paid around (10x1.065 + 0.5)x1.1 ~ 12.265$ and 12 month mean ~ 147.2$
Yearly normally come with 2 month free so (10x10x1.065)x1.1 ~ 117.15$

That whole quarter year loss if you compare

you should never prepay 1 year for a LET provider

I prefer one year payments because I don't like PayPal subscriptions but neither do I like to keep track of monthly payments for all my servers. With decent or extremely cheap providers I even like 3 year deals. OK, the MG promo 3+1 yr deal is more or less a fail but as long as some minimal jobs (like e.g. secondary NS) work, it still isn't a total failure.

And as @rcy026 already said (although my tolerance level is lower), the risk is quite limited. I mean I won't end up broke if a $20 or $50 deal goes belly up.

Yeah I had one service where the monthly auto payments didn't work for some reason which meant bothering support each time and then paying manually $2 per month until I forgot about it, didn't read the reminder (or provider had issue sending out notices) and service got deleted. Your card can expire or hit the limit and before you know it your unpaid service is about to be terminated, then you have to handle it manually anyway.

Yearly or longer payment beforehand for solid or cheap deal is easier as I want the service to run independently of me for that year at least (not every machine is idling by the way), it's a free time hobby, not a job for me. And you get better deals for longer term anyway.

Always recommend people pay monthly for the first month if possible, then pay longer term after the first month once they're sure the service works for them.

It depends on how much it is. cloudcone he also has a monthly payment product, you can just buy the monthly payment,
But I would go for the yearly payment if it's a good price for the event.
