It's always DNS (zoom.us)

On April 16, between 2:25 P.M. ET and 4:12 P.M. ET, the domain zoom.us was not available due to a server block by GoDaddy Registry. This block was the result of a communication error between Zoom’s domain registrar, Markmonitor, and GoDaddy Registry, which resulted in GoDaddy Registry mistakenly shutting down zoom.us domain.

Zoom, Markmonitor and GoDaddy worked quickly to identify and remove the block, which restored service to the domain zoom.us. There was no product, security, network failure or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack at Zoom during the outage. GoDaddy and Markmonitor are working together to prevent this from happening again.

Can you imagine, paying the ultra premium to markmonitor to prevent domain-related shenanigans then they fuck the dog and have your domain placed on hold at the registry immediately cancelling your business and forcing all your 2.7 zillion customers to use a different service in a panic?

    lol!

No one should use godaddy in this day and age. They're horrible as a registrar and they're horrible as a registry. Avoid godaddy managed tld.

Mentally strong people run their own registrar and registry, in different subsidiaries.
Charleston Road Registry Inc is one example.

    Is it really always DNS?

And I don't mean that nitpicking (the registry only holds glue records) but rather that I wonder whether the correct points should be

    • it's always corporations fucking up
    • No matter how much you pay humans make errors and/or are sometimes careless and/or stupid

Plus: So who fucked up, Markmonitor or GoDaddy - or both?

why is Godaddy involved at all?

You're confusing stuff everywhere. Markmonitor is the registrar, godaddy is the registry for .us tld.

A domain-level block like that is rare, but it’s good to know it wasn’t a security breach or DDoS. Hopefully, few providers tighten up their coordination so this doesn’t repeat itself.
