    Hi there

So I purchased one of the octopus machines and it came with a pretty broken Debian 12 template. I attempted to self install Debian 12 Net install and then couldn't install the bootloader.

I ended up having to use your Ubuntu 22 template and then doing many do-release-upgrades

The Debian 12 template was missing key components such as gpg, didn't even have sudo.

In addition my VM failed to create and I gave it over night when I ordered it. I had to re-install with the broken Debian 12 template which is where I noticed everything.

My issue is sorted but I thought I'd share some feedback.

    Thanks.

Thanks a ton for the feedback
will check what is the issue with the template and fix it

    Thanks

I've not been using ZNC. I'm just running irssi inside tmux at ctrl-c.club. It seems to have very good uptime, though it's twice been down briefly in the past few months. It's free, the guy who runs ctrl-c is really nice! There are hundreds of users and a good community spirit. :)

While i understand the problems around gpg (probably needed for apt to work) sudo has to my best knowledge never been a part of a Debian's minimal install. Disabled root + sudo is pretty much an Ubuntu thing. Having the same setup on Debian is about one invocation of apt-get install sudo and probably usermod -L root (not 100% that's the right approach - i don't disable my root account - but going by the man page it seems reasonable) away though.

My preference is to not have root have a password thus is disabled.

My biggest gripe is that manual installs don't work right otherwise I wouldn't have brought it up.

Even Ubuntu doesn't ask for root passwords during their installs.

Well, Ubuntu basically invented/popularized the disabled root/sudo approach, so it's not that surprising that other distributions might take another route but going by what @yoursunny posted you can actually archive the same installation in Debian these days by simply leaving the root password blank.

If install is borked you could still fall back on the good old dd method. It's pretty easy as long as you can boot some kind of rescue/live system. Just prepare a disk image matching your tastes locally or on some other server and pipe it over ssh into dd writing the image to the disk. Actually for me that's the standard way of setting up VPS but this obviously doesn't mean that it's OK for templates/installation options to not work correctly.

Pssst! Look at the top of front page (among announcements). Megathreads are firstly located there when active, then set down as things calm down. This thread was removed from the top yesterday.

Because your eyes are adjusted to avoid the top 2-3 threads that mostly belong to that one provider.
Now that the Megathread is unstickied, you can see it like any other thread.
A good case study in how you can't force people to see what they don't want to see.
