  • i've also grabbed some free domains which i can setup the reverse proxy to point to the services i'm trying to build on some of my low end servers.

  • Hello!
I would like to use a piece of your server.

    My problem:
I sometimes work at night and I don't have much to do, so I spend time on the internet reading about Linux, networks, automation, etc. The problem is that the company's proxy blocks some websites and the PC I use is old and slow.

    My current solution:
Today I have a server with Proxmox installed and some VMs. One with Windows, one with Linux Mint and one with Apache Guacamole. I use Cloudflare because my server IP was blocked by the company's proxy.
Everything works fine, but I'm always looking for new options.

My proposed use for your server:
If it is possible to use VMs, I would like to use Incus instead of Proxmox, or any other VM manager.
Instead of Windows/Linux Mint, use Debian with XFCE or LXDE.
Instead of Cloudflare, use Tailscale Funnel or something similar.

Today my server is in France. I like Hetzner, but I always use the datacenters in Falkenstein-DE, as the ping to Brazil is lower. I'm curious to test the latency from Helsinki-FI to Brazil, from what I saw on YABS it's not as bad as I imagined.

One question: If I break my shell, is there any way I can restore it without bothering you?

    I can pay $5.00.
Sorry about my English, I use an automatic translator.
    Thank's for your time.

Sure, why not? Nevertheless, maybe this server (lol) might not be the best choice? Sounds like you want a stable platform to ensure that you don't miss any IRC messages . . . maybe you want one of the tilde.club sites? I use ctrl-c.club. It works great! The folks are very nice! The guy who runs it is excellent! And it's free!

lol may be for folks who want to compile and test software projects? Maybe for folks who like the command line environment and are willing to pay extra for speed?

    Hi @Corolario!

Thanks for your well written request! Very much appreciated!

I understand your use case, and it's fine.

Right now I am rethinking the financial aspects of running lol. I will post again soon about the financial aspects and pricing.

    Thanks again!

    @Franzkafka @Corolario @hyperblast

    Guys!

    Thanks for your kind offers!

Maybe it might be helpful if I mention a few factors relevant to the pricing:

    • The server costs me €84.00/month, which is US$90.22 at today's exchange rate.

    • I love command line! Command line makes me happy every day! I don't want to switch away from command line to administer the server.

    • I love open source! I don't want to use closed source software, not even one percent closed like Blesta. (I mostly use a Chromebook. which starts as open source, and Google includes many closed source additions. For me, the Chromebook has a terminal, which I mostly look at as a tool to use to escape to the freedom of my server.)

    • Unlike our many "real" Patron Providers, I don't have racks of equipment in a datacenter. I'm just a guy, a Chromebook, and a couple of servers that I get from "real" providers.

    • It's not easy for me to stay in tune with more than a small number of Neighbors on my servers. To me, maybe eight seems okay.

    • This server has an i9-13900 with "Performance" and "Efficiency" cores. (I love how NetBSD calls these "fast" and slow.") The i9-13900 processor is really fast, but I am unsure how easy it is to set up virtualization which takes advantage of the differences in the two types of cores. Also, there is the question of how to use the integrated GPU in a virtualized setting. I have a lot to learn!

    • Maybe some day before long I might get a server with lots of uniform cores, lots of memory, and lots of disk. I have played around a little with OpenStack and there might be more solutions I could try if I wanted to make a little MetalVPS Cloud. But, for now, I have what I have, and it's great!

    • I like being part of and contributing to the Low End Community! I founded FreeVPS.org as a way to help LE Community members find free servers. Thankfully, at my request, @crunchbits took over leadership of FreeVPS, so I could get back to my own servers.

    • Over the several years I have been working on MetalVPS.com, and beforehand, lots of wonderful guys have been using my servers. I really enjoy talking with and learning from them!

Where I come out on all of this is that pricing generally around $20/month seems a good fit. Maybe more for someone with an expansive use case. Just for fun, I previously have tried $20.24 per month, and that's actually worked out well.

Some people might argue that $20.24 isn't Low End! Some people might argue that $20.24 or even more actually violates the LET rules. However, what's available here isn't just shared hosting, and it isn't just a VPS on a busy Node.

@Franzkafka @Corolario @hyperblast I'm very tempted to accept all of your offers just for fun! But maybe it's better for me to take it easy and to go slowly. Is it too crazy for me to ask you guys to increase your offers?

    Best wishes!

    Tom

    @Not_Oles / Tom

i would add mutt to my use case in addition to screen and irssi, but my bid would not increase dramatically. let's say $0.88/month. under these circumstances, of course, you won't be able to accept my offer. so i'm out of this number.

$20 per month is a significant amount to pay for a shared and potentially unstable playground. For that price, you could instead get a small dedicated server or a powerful VPS… Just my thoughts on this.

@Wolf Exactly! Almost everyone would prefer a small dedicated server or a powerful VPS. That's okay! I hope everyone gets the servers they want! :)

  • Hi @Not_Oles!
My offer was really low given this GB6 score.
I should have offered at least double, considering the amount of resources I intended to use from the server.
Thank you for the opportunity to correct my offer. But I will refrain from doing this, as I would only be increasing my financial contribution, but my contribution to the open source code and the community would remain null, considering that my use would be for a personal and solitary purpose.
I hope to one day be part of MetalVPS and be able to truly contribute to this noble purpose.
I hope you find good neighbors and that you continue to feed this forum with quality content.
    A good semester for everyone.

@Corolario said: If I break my shell, is there any way I can restore it without bothering you?

Oh, sorry, I missed responding to your question. I guess you are using bash. Sometimes, if your shell is stuck, you can

    • try ctrl-c -- this usually terminates whatever process is working

    • try tilde dot (~.) -- this disconnects but might leave something that's stuck still running

    • sometimes the reset command is what you need -- especially helpful when the terminal output is garbage

    • you can log in a second time and kill the prior stuck login. for this you need ps, who am i, and kill so you might want to look at those commands

Probably other guys have additional ideas. That's one nice thing about forums -- everybody can see and contribute to the discussion. I enjoy it when the guys using my servers post questions and answers. Almost always there is something I can learn.
