I liked the self-hosted datacenter more. Yes, it was in a basement which started with wooden frames, but it is like a two-edged sword (passion and dedication on one side, possibility of scam and fast exit on the other side).

Romania is not a land of investors and high-end datacenter, instead it is more of a land for low-end and torrents and cheap cloud. Going big might be good for business, but not for low-end.

@Calin I wish you success. Hopefully the rent and electricity will be low in the long run. Don't listen to me, but personally I would have wanted to see you buying a big hall, then invest in some solar panels and wind mills through funding from European Union (which has plans to go fully green for environment), then go fully independent. Again, I don't know much about this as I am not a business person - just an idea thrown in the void.

    @default

Just a inside note on the Hall + Solar Pannels.

A hall is cheap-ish at some level, reno is a fuking $$$$ to do it right.

Photovoltaic Panels - at the amount of KW for 100 servers, it makes no sense. You have 6-7 MO of sunshine in RO and that with a 8 Hour / day average. The cost will be enormous, and the ROI is like 7-8 YRS and in 7-8YRS you will start changing inverters and panels and so on. We did the math, it does not work for RO. It can work, but the expense makes no sense, for the moment, at 1KW/Panel maybe, but we are not there yet.

SRV need to run 24/7/365, so putting some extra load in night time, the infrastructure is not there yet also. These idiots did almost nothing since 1989 infrastructure wise.

either way you want to put it, if you do not already own or inherit a Hall, the building of a nice-ish DC makes no sense expense wise if you target low-end.

So moving in a already done DC makes more sense, at least until you cand/want to afford building your own.

Do you plan on moving all the current nodes to the DC? Or only some?

Within the next two months, our goal is to migrate our entire infrastructure, encompassing all iHostART customers, to this new DC.

    Hey!
I was just thinking about this today. If I kept my monthly cost by migrating the servers to the datacenter, I would not prefer that.
Good luck to Calin. One more competitor for the big players and one less for me :)

@default said: Romania is not a land of investors and high-end datacenter

    Perhaps, for now, but:

According to the Country Report published by the European Commission in 2019, the IT sector in Romania is very developed, and the country has a highly skilled workforce in this sector. For example, in May 2021, AWS opened an office in Bucharest, following the AWS Development Center launch in 2018 and an Amazon CloudFront Edge location in 2020. The Development Center is home to AWS teams working on key technologies for the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) service. Similarly, in 2020 Microsoft launched the first artificial intelligence laboratory at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, one of the country's largest economic higher education institutes.

    -

According to Speedtest.net, in 2021 Romania ranked fourth in the global list of countries with the "fastest broadband internet speeds (232.17 Mbps), preceded only by Monaco, Singapore and Hong Kong.

    -

In Bucharest, there are five IXPs. The Balkan-IX internet exchange holds nodes in two facilities, NXDATA-1 and NXDATA-2, the first neutral colocation datacenters in the country, which are owned and managed by local provider NXDATA. Romanian Network for Internet Exchange (RoNIX) is an IXP, a national infrastructure for traffic exchange between the country's telecommunication and service providers. Currently, RoNIX holds nodes in five datacenters in Bucharest (NX-Data-1, Ines DC, GTS, M247 and Teletrans). InterLan Internet Exchange (InterLan) is a neutral national interconnection platform for data traffic and internet exchange, with national points of presence in Bucharest, Constanta and Timisoara. NetIX ā€” a partner of Bulgaria's largest telecom provider, Neterra ā€” has a point of presence in Bucharest. NetIX is a global internet exchange platform with over 30 IXPs across 55 countries in six continents. DreamServer Internet Exchange is the fifth IXP in Bucharest.

    -

Global and continental datacenter operators like Equinix Inc., Digital Realty Trust Inc., NTT and Data4 have not invested in the country.

    -

However, a positive signal for the development of the data center market in the country was launched by domestic datacenter operator ClusterPower, which recently announced the opening of the first Romanian hyperscale facility in a 273,400 sq. ft. campus that is expected to house five buildings. The ClusterPower Technology Campus will have a capacity of up to 4,500 racks and 200 MW.

    Conclusion?

Yeah, big investors (barring Microsoft and AWS and a few others) are listening to the media and avoiding Romania and this gave Romanians an incredible opportunity to grow their own infrastructure and competition smashing records regarding prices and speeds. This seems to expand to the DC market now. Stay out at your own peril. The Romanians would manage anyway.

I think @Calin is an example of Romanian managing in any conditions. Yes, nothing is stellar or even legal, but he is 18 and everyone went through that phase, yet very few made it this far.

Im really happy for you, that you can finally switch into a datacenter. Out of the basement :)

Iā€™m looking forward that maybe the performance will increase too from this.

At all, congratulations Calin :) u really deserve that.

It's the same as last time.

Both five-host.com (his upstream) and ihostart.com don't work in Safari but work in Chrome.

mtr and ping is blocked too. nmap says host is up.

tor is blocked too, but why block safari users?

lynx can connect but don't support javascript.

Blocked in all browsers on my phone.

    This is weird. :D

I can access it just fine, but downforeveryoneorjustme.com displays it as down. Pingdom can do speed test just fine.
