This would be a great time to advertise, BuyVM Anycast. It's free for all customers, just need another node in the other BuyVM locations.

    https://buyvm.net/anycast-vps/

Also a good time to test your faliover / redundancy / 'ah shit' plans.

For example: See signature. Haha. (Our main site / portal is in Lux, now failover to Vegas)

If you are using it for prod, always have some type of failover.

Did you restore from backups/Binlog manually for the WHMCS database or do you have a clustered set up in place? Master master or master slave?

Genuinely interested in how small businesses are handeling these stuff.

We have good backups and can redeploy mostly automatically, but it requires a human and there’s no clustering. But we also run lots of different stateful apps which makes it hard(er) than if only a single MySQL db needed to be replicated.

Unfortunately we're stuck twiddling our thumbs here until the network is back online in LU.

    Maybe...? No routers were harmed.

When this happens it's unplanned. We have nodes that have 1000+ day uptimes and it hasn't acted up. When it acts up it's sudden and there's nothing we can do to calm it down. Customers just suffer until it's fixed.

Thing is, for end users you'll feel connections dropping, downloads not working, etc, so the node might as well be offline anyway.

Doing an announcement would be nice, but 'hey youre going to have to suffer for 24 hours instead of just ripping the bandaid off' doesn't always work.

Sorry, it's a lose/lose on our end other than 'well at least that node wont do it again' once complete.

    Francisco

hey man seems like it's down again. Ticket: #562135

    yep. down!

Yes, I understand that you missed a few classes once a year.
but now Francisco is reliable, everything is just a machine.
machines fail, then it would be such a problem that if the hard drive had gone and could not shoot back, I think the topic can be closed, it is already working. Sometimes the server was down and not many people had a backup... luckily it was just a network error :)
"the hard drive is a fault of another provider, which was, for example.

That ones on our remote hands group. They don't have tickets, so when the next guy came in, he gave it another reboot since he had the request in his inbox.

    There was 2 issues:

Issue #1 - The remote hands being careless with some cabling, causing a routing loop. This work wasn't supposed to be completed for a few more weeks, but they plugged in cables we had taken down during the rack issue we had some months ago and were pending optics.

Issue #2 - The reboot not coming back was because they had plugged in an old Juniper install media USB key back into the router that we told them to throw out 4 years ago. When it rebooted, it sat at a boot interface for some hours. I know for a fact that USB key wasn't there when we did the floor move (root -> luxconnect), so it was found at some point and put there.

We've been trying to get a serial console of sorts (which I would've then fixed the boot sequence easily), but there's not much in the way of a copper handoff in DC2. I'm waiting on feedback to see how LTE/5G connectivity is in that part of the facility and i'll hook something up with that instead. Failing that, going to just grab their wifi on some mini PC.

The best fix is to just get redundant MX204's and then the redundant core. We've already got this mostly setup on the crane side here in Vegas (it's easy when you're starting from scratch). I'll be pushing to get the same in place for LUX/LV by the spring or sooner.

It'll pickup again quick enough, i'm sure. You can follow on discord for our plans on changes. I'll likely send out an email tomorrow about what went on what we're changing for both brands.

If your site is verified with Google Search Console you can request a re-crawl/etc.

  • I will not complain, actually. Because I came for the price, resources, and for the service. The day I hit the one million per month target I will leave for probably the most expensive personal server available.
My websites are back, and that's good enough for me.
