What are the practical differences between CentOS and AlmaLinux?
How does AlmaLinux compare to the other current alternatives?
By using Debian.
*Chuckles in Debian
I migrated everything to Debian as soon as they killed CentOS 8.
Moved to Almalinux 8 and 9.
migrate to Debian and docker, rock solid
How do Debian and AlmaLinux compare to each other?
Just moving to Debian. Not a huge deal as we usually run everything as docker containers anyway. Hopefully centminmod has a plan too as I love that.
Yup. Not that Docker can’t run on other operating systems, but it’s great enough with Debian that there’s no need for ”Stream” or new OS’es that rely on Red Hat. Really good combination.
Cant beat centminmod raw performance tuning
One is a OS, the other is a cry for help at the mercy of Red Hat
Even better with Proxmox
Didn't AlmaLinux divorce itself from Red Hat?
Or virtualized anyway. Snapshots etc is a life-saver.
I use Virtfusion (KVM).
debian, thx!
Thx*
Thx!
We moved all our CentOS servers to TempleOS.
It's a worthy replacement.
”We are not 1:1 with CentOS Stream, as Stream may at points track well ahead of our releases.”
I.e. they try to remain as 1:1 as possible. Their freedom seem very limited in my view.
I’d much rather have a completely free OS with no such influence, one that has a community that together decide what paths to take. Especially when it comes to OS, as there’s such a good solution that ticks all of the boxes: Debian.
I use it for my desktop & laptop as well and it just works.
AlmaLinux sounds dumb as fuck. Just one step short of BozoLinux or AsscreekLinux. Impossible to use seriously.
DeezLinux
Migrated to CentOS Stream
Migrated to RockyLinux 8 & 9
What is so terrible about it?
Would you seriously use something called AsscreekLinux?
I already switched most of my systems to ubuntu (but I do admit I'm always a little afraid that canonical decides to change their stance on ubuntu). I'd like to really test debian as well just based on their track record and how many people here use Debian.
What are the main technical differences between Ubuntu and Debian?
Ubuntu is basically a tuned Debian beta. There's live kernel patching support though, so that's something at least.
What is the best OS for a very low resource VPS?
