Are OVH support treating you like idiots? Trying to report SSH key UI not working

I've been running production services on Hetzner / Digital Ocean / Vultr, etc. for many years. Not LE price range, but this is the nicest forum to ask about this.

Yesterday I've signed up for OVH for their VLE-16 offer. I get the account, add my SSH keys, click on Reinstall server, then it gives me an error:

An error has occurred requesting the reinstallation Internal server error

OK, I contact the support, telling them that I have this. Finally they reply, that my SSH key is wrong and I need to follow the guide for creating it.

I'm very surprised as this SSH key has worked everywhere so far, but let's see what the guide says.

ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -a 256

OK, I create a test key like this, and try it with this. Again, exactly the same problem.

I tell the support, then they just think I'm an idiot.

  • As we said we do not manage SSH keys for security reason.
  • Please not the operations you perform in your account have no effect on your VPS.
  • If you delete or modify or add a new key in your account this won't modify your VPS if you don't reinstall the OS.
  • The SSH are valid during the OS installation only.
  • If you need to add an ssh key after the OS installation, this is not related to the VPS.
  • It is a software configuration and you'll check it with your technician or sysadmin.
  • If you need a specific support please consider to contact an OVH partner:
    https://partner.ovhcloud.com/en-ie/directory/

Seriously? I've been using SSH keys for 15 years in production, I know what it means to add a key after installation and to have one as part of it.

BTW, the Support page shows a big "Switch to new interface" dialog, which redirects you to ca.ovh.com where your login doesn't work. So you have to come back, find the same dialog and click "Maybe later". Then you can open a support ticket.

  • ITT: OP is experiencing OVH's world-class renowned support.

I usually take the password login and add the SSH key myself rather than rely on the control panel to do it properly.

Yes, I've settled on that as well. But it's shocking how different it is from Hetzner. They are usually compared to each other.

They have stuff Hetzner don’t too

Much better DDoS protection, actually unique for the price paid

French providers in general are also very relaxed when it comes to bandwidth use (OVH & Scaleway both, probably more examples of this)

And even in billing, where they suck (buggy as hell), they got some basic features that Hetzner don’t, like topping up your account with a card payment

Also, support is a huge hit and miss. More people have better experience with Hetzner support compared to OVH, but to me, the complete opposite

I paid extra for a server at Hetzner with instant delivery, after a while, no server. Called Hetzner. A very noticably angry german told me to ”be patient”. I was very polite and professional and just asked how long I can expect to wait, he was very rude and said that he couldn’t know and that I have to be more patient. That I paid extra for ”instant” = not something they cared about at all

I’ve also had my VPS go down, and not responding to panel actions, and this was LOGGED in their console (the errors). Their support? They said my server wasn’t down because they’d know, they even said this even though their main website was down too

With OVH, I’ve actually gotten very helpful support fixing stuff for me (although I’d never ever had stability issues with them, so it’s just been billing)

  • OVH abnormal company. Everyone knows that already who has encountered it.

They confirm the order and then cancel it a few minutes later.

Nope, you’re just mad. Hetzner and OVH both have strict policies.

Lets say: - Too strict. 80% of customers are lost. Eventually the client leaves.

Hetzner is out of the question.

Do you seriously think you're in a better position to judge if their policy is too strict for their bottom line compared to their fraud department, having access to all relevant data?

I'm 110 % sure you're just mad, there's no way that you think this.

  • @emgh said: fraud department

Wasting time. And lowering the company's revenue for nothing. If I were the director, I'd fire them all.

    @emgh said: 110 % sure you're just mad

Look at the reviews. Many use real IP addresses, no VPN and real personal data. And still can't pay for their services. There's a lot of cases like this.

  • Frustrating, sure. Remember that this is the low end of the market, the self-service no handholding offers that are priced as such.

Expectations were set too high. Try the big players, feel the wind in your hair then pay the bill.

    OVH isn't that bad afterall.

  • @jenkki
They have the right not to work with you, it doesn't matter what the reason is, internally they are looking at some data, they don't have to develop criminals by disclosing it, there are alternatives, you can look at them.

The day the control panel works properly, is the day there will be world peace.

We have the right to leave them alone and not work with them. If they don't trust us, we don't trust them, simple as that.

Just don't be surprised to see negative posts about them afterwards

  • If you go to a supermarket and the security guard at the entrance slaps you in the face, will you come to that supermarket again?

  • A year ago I contacted the support because I could not run cryptsetup on new Rescue. OVH always declined that new Rescue got problems but they postponed the disablement of legacy rescue once or twice in the 2023 year. Finaly they removed the old rescue and I was afraid that I can not install Debian to encrypted disks from rescue.
However, they fixed the problem. When they removed the old rescue, I ran cryptsetup on new edition and it worked well. I firstly reported the problem in 2022 December (https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/183316/ovh-can-not-use-cryptsetup-from-rescue-customer) and I tried it at Summer, not worked but OVH still declined.
So it seems that they fixes the problem but do not confirm the existence to customers.
