    Personal stuff - Debian
projects/ work - Alma. Due to their LTS

I mean, Debian has at least 5 years of LTS(up to 10 with Freexian and some kernel patches). I think its enough for most companies. Even at work, I always run current stable on servers - I hate "rusty" software.

Even at work, the stallion coder likes to use the latest version, currently Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
This is even less rusty than Debian stable.
Having newer compiler means better optimization for the recent CPU.
Having newer kernel means better support for things like SR-IOV, AF_XDP, and io_uring.
The stallion coder then rewrites half of his app every year, to take average of these improvements, which increases network and storage performance.

    You have an outdated system?
    It's your problem.
You are supposed to upgrade your infrastructure and rewrite your integration every other year, to keep up with my changes.

When i was an intern for the first time, it was a cPanel server running Cloudlinux 7, from there they instructed me to use Alma/CentOS for stuff and it became my habit

How many times were you an intern?

I'm kind of honestly surprised I don't see more Windows Server.
Granted I know a lot of people here probably don't cater to a lot of Windows environments.

    This is LOWEND.

  • I have been running mostly debian for a decade. But I am bored of debian. I am considering moving to NixOS. A rolling release in prod with sounds more exciting.

Any Nix or Arch server users here?

  • Arch lol

  • i've moved away from debian for the last 5 years. and i'm 100% on ubuntu.

can anyone convince me to shift back to debian?

    3 times, 2x cPanel based, 1x DA

  • Debian for server and desktop to keep it simple.

at the end of the day the answer is going to be it depends.

it depends what hardware I'm installing on and if a particularity operating system has pros with it over another

it depends what's best for what I'm trying to do.

Best is always relative. is it best for my time? is it the best choice for the program or task?

generally I find Debian goes on most things followed by Alma for stability and LTS type environments, windows only when needed.

been doing Arch Linux as I've been testing Linux desktop environment for production workflows on my main workstation, very impressed with valves contributions to the Linux desktop lately.

Seems like Debian/Ubuntu is pretty much the given.

Top notch for server hosting needs.

ROFL. gnaa and goatse, that's some old school shit.

  • windows ftw

  • no OS, so all servers are secure. They're all idling anyway

  • In my opinion Debian is much easier to use than others.

What makes it easy for you to use?

  • Used to use CentOS a lot, but now stick with Debian since the stream version came out.

  • CentOS will always have a place in my heart but been playing with Alma Linux and Rocky Linux more for Centmin Mod testing and liking it a lot ^_^

    nginx -V
