Please talk me out of it... please
Until months ago I was self hosting 42 apps and services, including email, distributed over many servers. I then decided to stop it and switched to managed services almost for everything. I am now self hosting only my blogging app, another couple of Rails apps, Nextcloud+Collabora, Mastodon and a few small things on just 2 virtual servers.
I don't have anything else self hosted and I am in the middle of a crisis because I would like to go back to self hosting absolutely everything and manage tens of servers
I miss it lol

Why not get a beast of a vps, run proxmox and containers? Thats what i do, on 7950x nodes...
It's a disease. Not until recently, and I am sharing personal info here, a friend of mine was commenting how his wife collects shoes. That's 'funny' I said, so does mine. (Damn shows ). He said he collects fountain pens, which I found hilarious, and he didn't. Fountain pens??? I asked him. He then again asked me, don't you 'collect' anything. After downing a large beer (ok, and a shot), I said... wait. I think I collect servers!!!
The rest is not important, and he didn't understand much of it but I had realized that this is an addiction!!!!
No my friends, it's not normal to have 20+ VPSs idling. It's a fuc*ing disease! The sooner you recognize it, the faster you'll be 'better'.
I just discovered today 2 new/ancient VPSs that I have! That is not F'ing normal!
Exactly
I asked you people to talk me out of it, not to encourage me!
Joking aside, after reading your comment I actually wonder if this may truly be some sort of disorder lol.
Oh, I wasn't joking. I really believe server/VPS/host collecting is a disease. I am NOT kidding.
I think you are right. I don't think it's normal to be craving servers 😂
No kidding it is a disease. I just found this forum back in November, won a couple free credits for LimeWave and now have two servers from them (4GB and 32GB). There's no way I'm going to use the entirety of the resources I paid for because I only host several small Wordpress blogs. Yet, I'm sitting here thinking "I need more" or "that's such a good deal I can't pass it up." It's a problem and I can see why so many people here have 10+ idling servers.
You are rather optimistic
If I only had 10+ idling servers...Or 20, or 30, or 40...
Shoot, how many do you have at the moment?
We are all just a bunch of addicts it turns out lol
Orrrr.... It's just a fun hobby...
Show your wife this thread.
No... We are addicts.
I'm joining servers anonymous...
She would kill me. I promised to her to cut the spending on servers and the time I spend with them
I collect plastic tags on bread bags and rubber bands on asparagus.
I used to collect caps on milk jugs.
They do have recurring costs because they occupy space in our house, but the recurring costs are much lower than collecting servers.
They can be thrown away in a few moments, while canceling a server needs to wait for up to a year.
Happy wife, happy life.
Lol. Lowendtalk is like Las Vegas.
It has places with blinking slot machines
Providers are the people who pour your drinks.
You try to understand the system and want to get the best deal.
You are not alone
Happy life, no more wife???
Man, If my wife could see these posts, I would be ejected out of here like a fighter pilot from his plane!
I do not accept nor deny that these posts are mine BTW.
Serenity NOW!!!!!!
Oh man! That's the story of my life. Spent thousands of dollars with those idling vps over the years. But this is the year I'm gonna put them to good use 🤣 said everyone every year...
For fun i setup a vps on one of my nodes just to benchmark... Node is under load, so numbers are a little off. You should get something like this, enable VM-x and just run proxmox. All in one place, simple to backup, restore and blabla.
Basic System Information:
Uptime : 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes
Processor : Common KVM processor
CPU cores : 32 @ 4500.000 MHz
AES-NI : ❌ Disabled
VM-x/AMD-V : ❌ Disabled
RAM : 30.6 GiB
Swap : 980.0 MiB
Disk : 490.1 GiB
Distro : Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)
Kernel : 5.10.0-20-amd64
fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50):
iperf3 Network Speed Tests (IPv4):
Geekbench 5 Benchmark Test:

Single Core | 1558
Multi Core | 17883
Full Test | https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/19889622
YABS completed in 5 min 29 sec
That's a best case scenario. Wait until you start making up excuses, like "baby, I wont do it again! I had to try the new one on Debian", or "Screw dinner, Rocky Linux is here!"
F you Drago!!
That's some proper vps porn right there.
When theres no load on the node, the single core score is around 2250 xD
I love those nodes
Mute wife, happy life
A healthy mix is good. Pay for what gives you headaches, host what doesn’t.
For email I understand as it is fairly complex having to deal with spam etc and there are vendors such as fair email that offer privacy based email and some others.
But I think I would still prefer hosting my own nextcloud instance, bitwarden instance, use at least one vps for a wireguard personal vpn, and a personal space for all bot development and testing (platform bots, not ddos bots, don’t get excited). Of course moderation is key.
This thread reminds me of a place called redflagdeals. You jump on so many crazy deals your room is overflowing with crap you don’t even know why you bought.
Get a Wife.
You must not have tried this!
