Contabo: new SSD storage, promo with no setup fees

Just received email with news. Pretty good pricing for SSD storage. Wondering about IOPS, but members will dump YABS here for sure.

  • It's going to end up being oversold. Last time had to open a ticket to remove iops limit

Hard pass. Storage VPSes elsewhere are better, and cheaper too.

Would wait until black friday to get a better deal from a good provider

  • waiting someone to post bench and yabs... :)

Yes. In fact, for an IOPS constrained resource, I'm not sure what Contabo is up to by offering 4GB memory, but only 400GB disk.

Both of these providers offer 512GB+ disks at a lower price, and a decent amount of memory and cores (1GB and 1vCPU). Or wait for BF for the killer deals, @Ian_Dot_Tech had 512GB for $18 if I recall correctly.

    Contabo SSD is very limited. The total 4k IOPS near 10 MB/s, 64k 128 MB/s and 512M-1G near 200 MB/s.
Better than a cheap HDD, but it might be oversold that means that the entire user experience might not the best however acceptable for this price. If overloaded you can ask a node migration but the new node might be loaded too.

This is true of any vps, not just contabo. It doesn't need to be oversold. You just need one guy running a database that's hammered and everything starts crawling. Frankly, I'd rather have a vps that performs consistently mediocre rather than a vps that performs spectacular one day and crawls the next day, so I see the iops limits as a good thing.

  • @adns said: The total 4k IOPS

Limits on storage nodes may be different and adjusted according to port speed. I see they gradually increase port speed, so I guess IOPS must match port speed 1:1, otherwise on maximum speed there would be issues with I/O.

Same results as the cloud vps m.

Nope, I'm cancelling this. After using it for a while, the performance is awful. This seems to be same hardware as the as the regular VPS. Contabo never fails to disappoint.

I grabbed the top plan, the one with 3.1TB of SSD, in the US East region :)

Here was before asking to unlock the disk:

Performance wasn't anything shocking, was basically the same as the normal Contabo VPS's, just with more disk.

I planned on using this as a media server (Plex), and this seems to work well for that use case:

There is some minor CPU steal, but overall, performance is decent. I could reach around 700-800 Mbps network speeds consistently. I think this might be a keeper for me. I don't really see many storage options with a decent amount of CPU and RAM with 3-4TB in the US for under or around $30/month.

Unfortunately, I don't have the full Yabs saved, but I believe it was around 700 GB5 single core and 3.4k multicore, not impressive by any means but was enough for my use case.

Hetzner is more expensive if you want the same storage. Best alternative is Netcup, much lower cpu steal and awesome storage performance.

    I have a 2 x 4TB SSD + 2 x 240GB SSD E3 32GB config from Hetzner for ~40 euro per month, so if I really wanted to, I could use Hetzner :)

you could've gotten vps from interserver with 8TB storage (HDD) for $26 a month. you don't need SSD for plex media.
