What's your biggest screwup?

Around five or six years ago, I added a call to a function that runs a DB query, written by another team, in the code that renders the Facebook site. I thought the query was cached in Memcache, as one with a similar name was cached. Turns out it wasn't cached and the query was going to a MySQL database with only 5 replicas! oh no. I ended up breaking the News Feed for around five minutes until someone found my code and flipped the killswitch I added.

Around 12 years ago at a previous job, I broke the jobs websites for some of Australia's largest companies. I think at the time, all four of Australia's big banks used the company's software. We had separate beta and live branches of the codebase, and my change worked in beta, but when it was cherry-picked into to live branch, the tests passed but the code didn't actually work properly in prod. I owned up to it and got a more senior person to help fix it, but it was broken for maybe half an hour total.

Basically start funneling your money as young as possible into things that don't vanish into the air. Stocks, real estate, doesn't matter which....

Once I've had a woman by my side it became easier because otherwise I'd just throw all the money trying to impress chicks or the Jonesses. Your woman has to be on board with this otherwise she'll be the one messing your finances.

When you decide to marry, get a fair but otherwise ironclad prenup.

They don't have to. It can just as well be Israel, or United Arab Emirates, or India, or pretty much anywhere else. I'd say about quarter of world's population lives in countries that have active warzones. Peace is not really that common outside Western world.
