In my earlier years, yes I had originally done my blog on shared hosting. As I began learning more about coding etc and branching to other sites etc - I began buying VPSes instead. The challenge about using your own VPS for blogging is not the VPS itself but getting your domain on the search engines and being discovered by users compared with just using blogger etc. But once the search engines are aware - you're good to go assuming you have good content.
