how does it work with GDPR? Is the fact that Hetzner is a German company enough or not, if the data is actually stored in the USA?

No, begin a EU company doesn't qualify you for beging GDPR compliant automatically. Hetzner needs to give data to CIA just as AWS, MS, Google etc. does which would break GDPR rules.

Every company must comply to the law of the land.
    Germany - Hetzner Onltine GmbH
    Finland - Hetzner Finland Oy
    US - Hetzner US LLC

I guess there a one company but represented in two other countries. And all must follow main company country laws.

  • The real question is, just because Hetzner has hardware installed in the US soil and have a subsidiary there, can the US compel their GmbH to exfiltrate customer data in EU? CLOUD Act or whatever, I am a light year away from this GDPR stuff and alike as I don't live in EU or US.

Thats why they incorporated Hetzner US LLC. The liability is limited for that and doesn't extend to Hetzner Gmbh.

    jajaja?

  • They just use standard scheme. Found a countries who allow open a LLC remote even without physically visit them. Rent a space and fill up hardware to this space. That all. Even no need to be fully represented.

Many countries doesn't allow open a remote LLC and need physically visit country and sign up many papers. Some also doesn't allow foreigners to open own business.

USA has better rights in terms of many things i.e. freedom of speech etc than Germany lol. I'd be more worried Hetzner servers in the US have to follow German laws.

  • If nothing illegal is going on, I see no problems with Hetzner sharing information with US Authorities along as the US Authorities go through the proper channels.

  • Nice. They started using west and east like the big clouds. Maybe this means more presence in EU too like Netherlands?

Shouldn't Germany be labeled eu-west though?

  • Very nice. It's probably in the works, but the geolocation is killing me. I get 80ms to drive.google.com and it wants to go to Amsterdam for some reason. Hetrix also thinks my server is in Germany.

Just nitpicking really, the service itself is fantastic! I'm still letting it sink in that Hetzner Cloud in US just actually became a thing! :)

Deploy, connect, run YABS, post on LET and destroy.

  • Looks good, especially having the same pricing as in EU. Hopefully they will expand their offerings to the whole product base.

  • @Kassem said: Maybe this means more presence in EU

Need to find country who allow remote LLC. Not every country to do that.

  • It turns out changing the DNS servers from the hetzner ones to 1.1.1.1/8.8.8.8 fixes the issue. Everything else also gives me the US version, sweeeeeeet.
