@xaoc said: Proper terms are Republic of Moldova and Moldovan. Moldavia is not a country name.

Moldova official new name. Moldavia old Soviet time name. Still acceptable. There no big difference and no one really cares about it.

I'm telling you how it is and you're telling me how you believe it is. The country is called Republic of Moldova(RM), is not Moldova is not Moldavia or whatever else you imagine it is. Citizens of said country very much care about it. ;)

Not really. Like A Georgia or Gruzia. Official name vs local name. Old name Iberia. Only nazi cares about it. If you nazi there no questions to you.

Czechia or Czech Republic are the same. Slavic names vs British names. China named Kitay in Slavic. Germans are Nemtsy, British- Enemy coming from this.

Moldova just stylized name for short and bit better sounds.

There's nothing wrong with informally calling the country "Moldova" even if its official name is "Republic of Moldova".

(Compare: People call a certain other country "Serbia" although its official name is "Republic of Serbia".)

"Moldavia" is an older name in English that was used in Soviet times, but it's no longer the recommended name.

Kingdom of Moldavia was actually a bigger piece of land(split now between Romania, Ukraine and Republic of Moldova).

I think that it's like this: the name "Moldova" is an attempt to call the country by the name that the country has chosen for itself (in this case, "Moldova"). It's an attempt to be diplomatic and respectful of the current situation.

"Moldavia" is an old name that goes back to pre-Soviet times for the name of a historical region.

Nope, the real propaganda comes from Kremlin sponsored media. ;)

I tried to answer your question above. (You may not like the answer, but this is another matter.)

There's nothing wrong with "Moldavia" per se, especially in a historical context, but it's no longer the preferred name in English for the current country Moldova. (This is all.)

  • @angstrom said: f you want to call the country "Молдавия", no problem

For me that not a issue call Молдова or Молдавия. People use both of them. Exclude mentioned above.

No doubt, there's a different perspective from Россия towards Молдова (Молдавия) than there is from an English-speaking country towards Moldova (Moldavia).
