FIXED Network outage - Copper thieves

DataIdeas-JoshDataIdeas-Josh Member, Patron Provider
edited August 2021 in Outages

Good day,
Our Cogent provider has a fiber cut due to copper thieves.
From what we are hearing that they did quite a number to the lines and taking quite a bit of work to get lines back up.
We are currently up and running but at reduced speeds off our other carriers.
Come and join us on our discord and also get updates on our twitter.

Is there another source of info somewhere?

Not doubting it, but I just don't do Discord and I'm curious how widespread the impact was. Stealing copper is pretty low.

  • Is there a copper sheath around fibre cable?

Copper thieves don't care what they are cutting into or know for that matter.
They probably just see a line and assume its copper even though its fiber.
But areal fiber does have extra shielding and usually support wires to hold it from sagging too much from pole to pole.

Fiber optic cables in China are labeled fiber optics cable contains no copper, stealing it is worthless.

Wait until people figure out that they can smoke fiber.

Thieving scum will take anything - even slate roofing from non-derelict buildings.
BTW, I was being a touch facetious regarding cable construction. ;)

Unless the scum's buyer is a competitor. :open_mouth:

I mean the copper thieves jack copper from electrical panels....

  • Stupid is the copper thief who mistakes fiber for copper.

AT&T in the US has a similar pole, but it says "Sit and swivel while reading your bill"

**## Update: another phone call to @CogentCo has mentioned that this will probably extend into the late morning hours of tomorrow.

We are online but at reduced speeds. There is a couple of troublesome subnets that we have that are down and trying to get up asap. **

People in Portland, Oregon in many neighborhoods need to park their cars in their garages (and not their driveways) because meth heads will steal their catalytic converters. See reports of that on Ring every week.

These characters love copper. I recommend this movie, it's called: Black Cat White Cat. You will laugh like crazy from this comedy, to get you back in a good mood.

In Africa, they steal the highly toxic oil out of high voltage transformers and use it for cooking.

Cogent port has came back online. Routes are currently jacked. Please bear with us as things level themselves back out.

    Moving off-topic..

An issue everywhere, it seems: battery powered angle grinder and a one minute task. :-\
Catalysts are a f'kin stupid idea anyway, when emissions should be reduced at source not at the output. There's a 800cc Honda motorcycle that gets 80MPG, showing what's possible - just lack of drive from manufacturers/oil producers. So now we get forced into electric usage, with more production energy usage and toxic waste. Just like catalytic convertors. C'mon hydrogen!

Your Ring is used for something good? Mine is just full of bobcat and coyote sightings.

When the Texas snowstorms happened, we were getting 5 notifications a hour about “Power outage on x street, anyone else?”

Burying the cables doesn't always work either. BT do this in certain area in the UK, but they still have manhole covers for access to junction boxes/etc. It's not unheard of for someone to open one, snip, go to the next one, snip, and just pull the cables out the ducting.

There is always a possibility of fiber going down. You just hope that there is enough diverse routes that you stay up.

Kosturica is a legend, but his movies are not for everyone in current era. That movie is good indeed, have so many layers beyond commedy: tragedy, drama, thriller.
