Some of the ISPs or their upstreams have their own speed test server so you are just testing LAN speed not internet speed.

You are totally correct in this, I have been saying this for months.

I can also tell you that some of these speedtest servers are 'tweaked', for example certain IPs on the same network get vastly different results. For example, take one server and assign /32 from 4 different subnets, 3 will give one result and the newest IP block will give another (better) result.

Additionally, I have found in some of my tests on third-party networks, that the IPs of these servers have been locally intercepted to deliver faster results.

Some test servers are better than others. Some test servers use gigabit connectivity while others use 10gigabit, if a gigabit test has more than one running at a time it is going to show slower results.

Some I found use 100Mbps and some have gigabit connection and only fractional gigabit uplink.

Its all very hit and miss.

hmmm everyone has 100Mbit - 1Gbit, somone more as 1Gbit? arwwwwwww

Is that the free one? :O

  • Not much to say here. The server I work with has 100 Mbit/s unmetered and the second has 100 Mbit/s too but to be honest I don't even use 10 Mbit/s on both. Just for production hosting to hosts sites.
