60TB is insane and most sane ISPs will call you and ask what’s up.

@HowardWolowitz Did your ISP mention any kind of Fair Usage Policy ( FUP) for you?

If this is within the limits, why would the ISP even bother ?

I'm in Switzerland, and need to move 60TB of data from my home NAS to a temporary location while I rebuild the box the data is currently on. I have 1G FTTH so bandwidth isn't so much of an issue.

The cheapest logical option I've found so far appears to be a Hetzner SX132 @ EUR 184/mo (+EUR196.04 setup fee, and 30-day cancellation notice).

Does anyone have any other creative ideas or suggestions? If it has connectivity to SwissIX, that's a bonus.

Backups are cold, remote and would be far slower than a hot wire sync so restoring is not my preferred method.

ask provider if someone sets up custom plan for you.

for temporary hetzner becomes costly because of there setup fee otherwise for long its fine.

using above budget, you could easily bypass 750gb daily upload.

    STORE-1-L from Online: https://www.scaleway.com/fr/dedibox/store/
with 12x4TB disks and a bit cheaper (150 EUR), especially for setup (100 EUR).
Doesn't quite add up to 60TB though.

But it all sounds a bit insane to me, what do you mean "rebuild"?* Couldn't you find a way to do it without wiping the data? Rather than spend 300 euros on something you'll use just for a few days.

    * I guess MD RAID to ZFS or the other way round. In which case better look for creative ways to ensure you don't need to solve such an issue ever again. (Building 2-3 smaller arrays, switching to 2 or more separate smaller NASes, etc).

DO NOT GO FOR ONLINE!! It is a nightmare of a provider.

  • have you looked at Google Cloud Storage? and then virtually mount the drives so you can temporarily store your content there

Buy 5 14tb wd drives and then return in 30 days or sell them. You don't need the internet

  • SH_DreamSH_Dream Member, Host Rep

@HowardWolowitz Gang doch schnell in Interdiscount und kauf eh paar USB Sticks :D

    Now back to topic :D
if it would be possible to split your data in some portions, I may be able to help you out. Let's say somewhat between 15&20 TB of Raw storage. Maybe someone else has also some spare Storage which he could give you for a limited time being.

    Warm regards Dream

Google Drive could be cheapest option

Use wasabi/b2 if you want something reliable. You can talk to their sales on ur use case. The most you have to pay is 60*5 EUR. On the other hand, try hetzner auction server with couple of drives intact. You can cancel after you finished using that <200 EUR (if u used up to a month).

Even if he uses storage for 1 month they will continue to charge for 3 months. I tried this and got screwed. They have a minimum 3 month storage payment used.

Or a conscience either, I guess. That's a dishonest thing to do.

Google Drive is cheapest option, Amazon and Microsoft cloud are very expensive.

IMHO backblaze is cheaper than all three you mentioned. They have some comparison (might be biased of course, and I'm not sure how accurate those prices are):

  • Backblaze comes in at $900 for what OP wants.

That said, is OP ever coming back?

It's fraud to return products for false reasons in various jurisdictions (and not every one has money back guarantees for whatevs). It increases costs for everyone, so suggesting to do this makes you an asshole.

  • Google Cloud compute gives you a $300 credit I think. You can use it. Equally azure offers some credit, so maybe combine both and max out that credit?

    Regards!

  • Try to find some floppy disks at a garage sale, mail them to the provider, then manage stuff and shit

For Google, each GB will cost you 12 cents/GB for network egress + at least 4 cents/GB for storage (cheapest, not sure if there's any redundancy at that level) = 16 cents/GB. $300 / .16 = 1.875 TB. You'd still have 58.125 TB to deal with.

I didn't say anything about false reasons ? You can easily sell them though and make back 90% of what you paid. Which is still cheaper.

So what exactly did you mean by "return in 30 days"...?

  • Places I have bought from for similar things in the past have been happy to give a store credit refund for this. You don't need to lie / be dishonest about it. If where ever your buying doesn't offer something like that, then sell them on eBay or something drives keep their value pretty well considering.

Either method here has higher upfront costs but cheaper after.

    It's inherently dishonest.

You didn't say when you bought it "I'm going to use this for 29 days and then return it". You bought it under cover of deception.

If you buy a product and intend to use it, and then do use it, it's immoral to then return it. Your ethics shouldn't be defined by what you can get away with.

That's exactly what was said (not 29 days but always a small time period). Before the sale. I'm not sure where the assumption of lying comes in. I have no idea if it's a commission thing at the shops or if it's because they are gaurenteed to get money and then can resell the original item at almost the same price (as openbox usually) I don't know, but more than once a store has been happy for this to happen. One time the store wanted a restocking fee which was small as well.

Obviously if there is any damage / missing peices etc then the exchange can't go ahead.

To be completely clear here. No deception or false reasons are used.

  • SH_DreamSH_Dream Member, Host Rep

Just as a side note, the OP is a Swiss citizen. Therefore I assume that if he would order these hard disks, he would probably order them in Switzerland. In addition, we are officially not part of the EU, which means that the 14-day return policy is very limited for us in terms of material goods. Yes, there are some providers who do this, but they only do it for their own interest. So we are not forced to take back things which have no production defects or further damage.

And as @raindog308 has already described this is morally also on the outer edge. You also don't go buying a car for 150K$ and return it after let's say 13 days with the reason that you don't need it anymore.

Just my own opinion on this subject.

What the fuck? No man, a return means a loss to someone, often many. There's the store (labour expended, expenses incurred, profit gone), the manufacturer of the goods (shipping costs, labour inspection costs), or other consumers (increased cost from lost store profit). I have no idea why you think USED returns can be sold at near original cost. The cost of used items on Amazon that I've bought have been far more than 10% different in price than new.

Ever see clearance shelves in computer stores? Lots of old as shit returns.

Kids these days don't know the difference between renting and purchasing. Probably because they didn't grow up with video rental stores.
