You are very quick to snap up all the loss leaders from the stable guys.

Frankly it might not worth it because the time spent hunting for crazy deals or even staying up late at midnight will eventually sacrificed my health and my life.

Not to mention the wasted money on idling the servers because some are too good to let go. One of my 2020 resolutions is to spend less time hunting for those deals.

I mean, you certainly can relate to people who based in Singapore tend to be more "kiasu" (or basically FOMO).

FOMO is late to the party. We've had the term "kiasu" (怕输 in 闽南语) for decades. I now think it is crazy to spend the time looking for all these deals because I might have achieved VPS nirvana realization: what I need is not much, but what I want is too much (需要的不多,想要的太多)

I am mostly happy with my Ryzen VPS that does all that I need now and in the foreseeable future.

    • @SmartHost $31.95, KVM 2GB, web server
    • @VirMach $4, KVM 384MB, Asterisk server
    • @HostSlick $25, VZ7 4GB, idling
    • @Cam $1, VZ7 128MB, idling
    • yoursunny.com domain at Cloudflare, $8.03
    • yoursunny.cn domain at ename, ¥60 (about $9)

    Some Static websites - S3 hosting - arond 5-6$/month
    Storage VPS - Nextcloud - 24$/year from @seriesn
    Mails - 10$/year - from mxroute
    Reseller Hosting - 30$/month
Domains - around 300$/year (Mostly due to costly TLD's

  • Idling VPS - Most of them are paid annually - if monthly average, about $30 per month

Started domain collections yesterday - bought 6. I am afraid it is even more tempting than vps...... I need to control my hand.... :'(

  • After vote, counting my collections, i still have no idea how can i reduce the numbers :)
So leave it since most of them paid yearly and "plan" to not watch any sales in 2021

  • im about USD50 per month

    • MXroute @jar $5/y, used in GitHub Actions

    Annual cost last year: $61.95
    Annual cost now: $53.88

vps5 and vps9 are to be canceled by Black Friday.

    domains

    • yoursunny.com @NetDynamics24 $6
    • yoursunny.cn eName ¥60 (about $9)
    • ndn.today Porkbun $14.89
    • yoursunny.dev Porkbun $11.18

These prices are annual price of the last payment.

ndn.today subdomains serve my projects related to Named Data Networking. It's added for branding reason.
yoursunny.dev subdomains serve my projects unrelated to NDN. I don't use *.yoursunny.com for technical reason: cookies would overlap and cause unnecessary overhead.

Careful. Once you start using a domain and others start making links, it's difficult to justify canceling the domain because it would break the links and disappoint the potential readers.

I wanted to cancel yoursunny.cn but Analytics says otherwise.
However, it's difficult to transfer .cn domains and I have to rely on my father to make payments, so I'm afraid I'll eventually lose this domain.

I'm thinking to rename some boxes so that I can have double capacity.
    Two schemes are under consideration:

    • free vs paid

      • vps0-vps9 for paid servers
      • box0-box9 for free servers
      • This would allow me to sign up for microLXC et al without taking up a slot for premium services.
    • NAT vs non-NAT

      • vps0-vps9 for non-NAT servers, including IPv6-only
      • nat0-nat9 for NAT servers
      • This would allow me to get WebHorizon 6-location bundles if I feel like to.

Transferring .cn to registrars that accept USD payments is possible but renewal fee costs double.
yoursunny.cn currently expires on 2022-10-07. I probably should delete it by then and forget about it.

These are great ideas. Not a bad things to expand. But I have a question - would you mind sharing how you can get 10 free boxes? I know some providers like oracle do offer such, but I can't count 10.

Perhaps keep it with Chinese registrar then? I guess you can use some e-payment gateways, like Alipay / Wechat pay? If you have kept it for some time, it would be sad to let it go - unless the maintenance cost is unbearable, which I think not the case here

Is it because .cn can only be sold to individuals/entities in China?

    15 VMs with 27TB of storage...$85.85 a month

I could drop a couple of those (and lose about 12TB of storage) and drop the bill in half. Still, I'm only paying about $3.17/TB/mo. However, in reality I mirror everything over two unrelated hosts, so it's more like 13.5TB of storage at $6.34/TB/mo.

Plus a couple shared reseller accounts because I can't be bothered to admin my friends/family's crappy web pages.

Not every slot needs to be occupied. It's OK to keep open slots.

I don't have Alipay myself and have to rely on my father. The procedure is:

    1. I order the product until Alipay QR code appears.
    2. I start video chat with my father, and he uses his phone to scan the QR code that appears on his TV screen.
    3. A minute later, eName would indicate that the payment has succeeded.

There's no "fraud check" nonsense even if order and payment are in different countries.

If you have kept it for some time, it would be sad to let it go - unless the maintenance cost is unbearable, which I think not the case here

yoursunny.cn was created in 2007, so it's more than "some time".

I had 65536.cn and iloveu4ever.cn and openxml.asia and ext.so but nobody wanted to buy them.

Is it because .cn can only be sold to individuals/entities in China?

Foreign entities are allowed to have .cn.
However, since China can cut off the domain if there's objectionable content, .cn doesn't have a good reputation.

I registered 65536.cn in 2006 and deleted it in 2013.
The registrar didn't actually delete it, but transferred it to an investor. It has been on parking page for the past 7 years.

Why cancel a non-refundable annual purchase 11 months early?

Surely, that wasn't a bot purchase, right?

I have only started having Alipay 1 or 2 week ago. In general, it works fine so far. I understand you live in the US. Is it the reason why you are hesitant in using it?

yoursunny.cn was created in 2007, so it's more than "some time".

Then definitely good to keep it. Maybe add a personal mailbox for communication with Chinese entities?

May I ask what the meaning of 65536 is? I am sure it has value otherwise the investor would not have bought it.

Yes, 65536 means 2^16. These numbers make sense to me. I also had a phone number ending with 2048 because it's 2^11.

I registered 65536.cn domain in 2007 with the ambitious plan of writing 65536 computer and networking techniques, but only wrote one in a year.

In 2008-2009 it briefly became my portfolio / blog; this was also my only attempt on self-hosted WordPress, with ?p= URIs.
At the same time, subdomains were loaned to classmates for their class projects.

In 2010, I merged everything into https://yoursunny.com/ domain.
    3 years later, I deleted 65536.cn.

Now, yoursunny.cn was merged into https://yoursunny.com/ in 2017.
Thus, it wouldn't be too bad to delete yoursunny.cn in 2022.
