  • Disk I/O (especially write speed) looks a bit better on your V4. I wonder if this could be because of the older V3 or just because I've got a noisy neighbour. How do your V3's perform @chx?

Just to mention: this is very good value for money.

  • Which CPU is better?

  • @cybertech said:

It depends. The V4 is newer (2014 vs 2016) and has 10 cores insted of 8. As the V3 has a higher single core speed, the single core benchmark is a bit better. Overall, the V4 is a tad better.

Same thoughts. V3 should perform better for the user but as a node V4 might have some more capacity. I get quite some stealtime on V3 and benches fluctuate much. Waiting for it to settle before loading it up

  • Stealtime is very low on my V3 node. Happy about that.

Note that they sell it as 'dedizierte kerne'. This translates to 'dedicated cores'. But for €4/month this probably only means that 2 full cores are available to you when you need them, though they are still shared. This could lead to more stealtime in certain scenarios.

  • @debaser thanks for this explanation.

  • Finally got my stacked(4 cores) one.

Grabbed three. I am volunteering to rewrite and host a popular amateur historical photo collection in Hungary, the new version will have HTML/JS/CSS posted on Github Pages fronted by Cloudflare and all the images go into Backblaze B2, again fronted by Cloudflare and then the dynamic data goes into an Elasticsearch cluster which will be hosted on these three... pretty high availability with a tiny budget: 10EUR/month cost for this cluster and 5 USD/month/TB for the images. Zero EUR for bandwidth :) I was chasing more-than-4GB-RAM VPSes for months now, so happy this came in. Yeah, 8GB would be even better but then again 6GB will do :)

At worst the admin UI goes down because that will be only on one server. Oh well :)

Is that @chx of Drupal infamy?

  • bought a 2core VPS yesterday but I'm experiencing packet loss since ~2h ago.
    Am I the only one?

They've sent an email about this

  • I received an email explaining this about 1 hour ago . There's a problem with the network in their datacenter which causes heavy packet loss for about 1/3 of the customers.

  • @angstrom @debaser
You're right. Just checked my mailbox.

  • hope it bounces back with 10gbps

Posting the google translate version (German-English) of the mail I received. Posting the link to the text- if you would like to see the translation(s) in other languages.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

From 11:59 am, a disruption of the entire First Colo data center occurred. This manifested itself in the form of heavy packet losses and increased latencies on different routes. At present, the cause is still unclear, as is the exact extent. In our own monitoring we see no problems in 2/3 of all monitored systems, while 1/3 partially shows the described symptoms. Customers also tell us about perfectly accessible systems as well as about disruptions on individual routes.

Once we have a statement from the data center, we will post it through our social media channels. Our Twitter feed, about which we reported immediately on the disturbance, can be viewed as usual on our website at https://php-friends.de/news.

We thank you for your understanding and patience.

    With best regards
    Your team of PHP friends

  • Public routing went down and is now slowly coming back up again, according to their Twitterfeed.

Yeah seems I checked right when they where doing some reboot or something. It's all up now. Also doesn't seem they restarted nodes, just the network went down.

Network seems back up again, speed looks okay, latency from my connection is back down to a stable 10ms. Just experiencing a bit of packet loss.

Stealtime is very low on my V3 node. Happy about that.

Note that they sell it as 'dedizierte kerne'. This translates to 'dedicated cores'. But for €4/month this probably only means that 2 full cores are available to you when you need them, though they are still shared. This could lead to more stealtime in certain scenarios.

The steal time should always be around 0% in average. If not, please feel free to complain :)

Did you get the email with the link to the CRM portal? (reads something like Kundeninterface)

They have a Kontakt tab - I guess that's how you raise a ticket.

I may be stating the obvious but I wanted to drive my Mac's spellcheck crazy by typing kontakt.

Yes, just use one of our contact forms. Or send an email to [email protected] :)
