I once used a Contabo VPS as a virtualizor resource pool just because you get like 8GB of RAM, 200GB SSD and 4 Cores with their smallest plan lol (4,99€/mo). Was only for some fun projects and experimenting also with IPv6 but was fun actually. Set up some IPv6 only VPS, connected them to Cloudflare 6 to 4 and had the websites backed up automatically via Rsync :)

This is exactly what I was getting at, that sounds cool. Too bad EU is a location I'd never actually race out and buy as I don't have a good connection to there and I don't have anyone to serve there.

Yeah I hear ya mate! It's just awesome spinning up and down vms, re-allocating resources, backup, snapshot, destroy go back and forth. It's like Serverporn < 3
The fact that with one plan you can have so many instances is just awesome. You don't need to go with Contabo, was just gonna point out what things you can do with a Resource Pool. It's just awesome. With many webhosts you don't get ssh/root with shared hosting. With a resource pool you spin up an instance, tweak it, optimize it (or just use centminmod) and have full root/ssh access, ability to backup/restore with one click, rsync etc :)

I've never tried contabo but it looks like the sort of thing I'd try out one day for the lols and they aren't on my "shit list"

Did you install Virtualizor on your VPS and split it up? Sounds like what I did with Proxmox. Does contabo allow virt pass through?

Yeah I installed it on their vps. Back then they did dunno about now. But for 4,99€/mo you don't have much to loose really ;)
Check my signature for my contabo review. I'd call them fairly decent and long established. Not the top of the line but by far not the worst performing either. Great price/specs ratio, just some network hiccups here and there.

You're talking to someone who has services from alpha and woot and am rather happy with what I get for the cost. I definitely don't need enterprise level uptime SLA or any crazy n+1 premium shit.

I will read your review and check them out one day, I have a bit of a list now to check out. I've pretty much tried every host on LEB including the new CC shit hosts. My expectations are directly proportional to the price paid.

It's the only mindset to have. This is low end box, where the specs are low, there should be ZERO hand holding support, the price is low, there should be ZERO entitlement, and tickets should be able to go for a week without answer before jumping up and down.

Unfortunately it's full of people who expect too much for too little lol

ImpactVPS / ImpactShared has them I believe.

They always come to my attention when the 50% off coupon has expired lol

What package are you wanting? The only coupons that generally don't work are the 512MB ones. The ones for VDR4 and higher were still valid last I checked. Even years later.

This would be Seattle, not LA, though. And openvz on old kernel. But you'd get decent IPV4's included and fast network and storage. Oh, and they respond to tickets in minutes to hours. Stop with this one week support expectation for low end providers. That's ridiculous and not acceptable for any one or any use case.

Thanks sir/ma'am, you're right I was only trying the smaller plan. I'll aim higher. My expectations will increase accordingly.

LOL! I have about 5 resource pools from woot, they're fine for the price and for setting up what I like to call shit-vms.

Forget using them for anything remotely serious but to use for testing, why not. I also have NFP's and hostmybytes pools. Cheap toys for me to play with.

Honestly you can't even get a transactional email to Gmail from any woot ip. It's that bad. For running backup plex/jackett/sonarr/radarr/lidarr instances it's perfect and rarely goes down.

As long as it's cheap and not an outright scam, I'll try it out in the spirit of low end :)

Your dual personalities are bizarre. You'll shit all over one provider who is cheap and crappy, and then come back and say "it works for what it is" when it comes to a known spammer and borderline reseller of not-as-advertised services. Do you work for CC yet?

    It's not dual personalities.

It's called marriage syndrome. A guy may really dislike his wife but ends up defending her when some other person badmouths/wrongs her because you just kinda have to.

In other words, he has invested too much of ego into that host that he has to defend it for his own sake rather than the host's.

  • LOL well, here's the thing.. I've said numerous times that woot and alpha are shit hosts who spam and oversell like a mofo. I've also said that for the price paid what else can you expect?

I still stand by my position, not because I have to or am obliged to, no marriage, no shill relationships, just my opinion.

I've said it before and I'll state it again - if you want cheap toys then buy the cheap shit and understand that it will be inherently shit. If you want premium then pay according. I know I'm not the only person here who understands that.

Yes, this. LES all say explicitly no support.

  • uptimeuptime Member

I've been impressed with excellent IPv6 performance on LES (deepnetsolutions LA).

  • LES is the perfect example of low cost, low expectations. It works, it's cheap and definitely gets the job done at the lowest price, at the expense of IPv4 and support.

LEB shit hosts are mostly low cost but seem to set the wrong expectations, such as performance, support, uptime or "premium". We all know they suck, but they seem to do well when they don't deadpool. They provide IPv4 and support to a degree, proportional to the difference between the price compared to the LES options.

LET hosts are slightly better when they have no affiliation with CC, and the expectations increase with the price. We all know who the good hosts are and basically none of them are on LEB.

The point is there is choice, you use your wallet to make that choice.

Yeah, but they do that themselves.

From the LEB post of alpharacks:

“AlphaRacks is a premium web hosting provider based in Los Angeles, CA. Initially started in 2006 as an on-site IT consultancy firm providing support to local businesses, the AlphaRacks brand was launched in 2013 offering mainstream premium hosting services to both web start-ups and large enterprises. We currently support over 40,000 clients of all sizes in over 100 countries worldwide. Support is provided 24x7x365 by our in-house dedicated staff; services are provided by leveraging strategic partnerships of top tier facility and network providers, ensuring the services we deliver are highly available; which is backed by our service level promise agreement to you.”

  • I noticed this one here today: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/155267/vps-resource-pools-kvm-vps-openvz-7-los-angeles

$5 per month buys 2 ipv4 addresses, 2 shared cpu cores, 2 gb ram, 30 gb ssd, 2 tb traffic, and possibly some tales to tell. Looks like their LA node is at Psychz. Mixed reviews, company appears to be operating out of Indonesia. They've been (marginally) here on LET for a few years with recent / previous offers involving datawagon so I dunno, but if w**t and alpo-racks are your cup of tea ... then ikihost may be more grist for your "I'll buy that for a dollar" yolo mill.

That's exactly my point, the host sets an expectation that it's 24x7 support, etc - which I suppose is essentially true, they do seem to operate support 24x7 but definitely not any sort of quick turnaround.

Whoever runs alpha and woot are pretty good at marketing, that's my main thought.

Thanks for your input there, that was well thought out :) I actually have these guys on my NO list, mainly because their offers are flawed and needed to be corrected so many times, I just wonder how fucking hopeless they might be when it comes to running a few servers. As for based in indonesia.. well.. the hosts I settle with tend to be AU/US/UK based, so read into that what you will.

Have you checked dediserve? https://manage.dediserve.com/cart/cloud-resources/ not exactly low-end but maybe interesting.

Think of it as a VPS reseller. You are allocated a bunch of resources which you can distribute across a couple VMs. You get charged for all of it even if not using the resources compared to for example DO.
