colo offers, do you want to see them here?

$30 limit per U.
It's not easy to define a limit in my opinion.
For me I got a colo for 1U in Zuid-Holland (Tier 3 DC) for arround 40 EUR, with A+B feed 0.5A @ 230V, 10TB traffic, two uplinks and cross-connect to a different server.
On the other hand, for 30 EUR I have something in Germany with so called "power flatrate" but traffic is expensive as hell. Also this DC doesn't have any generator. Would be a good mining colo.
Should the limit only per unit, without any extras? Then the limit should be much lower as I also got decent offers for 9 USD per unit in the past or 0 USD because the extras are pricey.
IMO no limits for colo. Someone knows what they are looking for when it comes to colo
Yes.
They're reselling rackspace in Alboinkontor Datacenter and I don't think they want to make profit with this.
If you go directly with the DC you pay 31,09€/m for 1U, 100W, 1TB traffic on 100mbit.
Colo offers would be nice.
Yes. but it has to be from reputable providers. Otherwise who stops people like Joshua Prout from making use of this.
So can one do with any other service ?
JProut got a provider tag before.. He went on his rampage again... What's to say he won't do it again if he gets another tag again on a new alias?
No, Collocation is like bitcoin, you put physical hardware there, which is not possible to charge it back.
Nothing prevents them if they want to scam you, to just empty the racks and take all the hardware.
If the company is less then 1 year old or not reliable, do not collocate anything there.
It’s not so simple.
For example, I wouldn’t collocate anything with Equinix either without properly insuring it including against theft and demanding them to present me their insurance certificates. No matter how old or trustworthy the company is.
Why's that? (genuine question). Is there any story behind this?
What kind of insurance certificates would you be looking for them to have?
What other questions to ask of a colocation provider?
Yes there should be colo offers but if we already have them, then do we need any more rules or sections? Just keep doing what we're doing.
Yes there should be price limits to keep things low end.
The limits should be no higher than the dedicated server limits, and preferably lower. The main idea of colo is to save money by using your own hardware instead of renting a dedi, so the colo should really be priced low enough that you have at least some hope of doing that, but that's hard to enforce.
Re "Someone knows what they are looking for when it comes to colo": that person also knows where WHT is and we are not trying to be WHT. If they want WHT they already have it.
If I have to name a number as a price limit, let's make it $49 maximum no matter what it is that is being offered, and spending $49 has to get you enough basic power and network connectivity (maybe not much) to put a low end server there and use it without additional purchases. If the provider also has more expensive offerings they can use their own site for those, just like they do now with VPS and dedis.
I'm not terribly supportive of different limits depending on region. Some places are more expensive and that's life. Buyers have to take that into account when looking for affordable housing, retail space, restaurants, or whatever. Servers are no different.
@willie Dedi limit is $84/mo now. Is that going to get knocked down to $49 again?
Not up to me and while I'd prefer knocking it back down, I don't feel strongly about it. Yes my mention of $49 was in reference to the old dedi limit. I do think that a colo slot with no server should be cheaper than a dedi, which is a slot with a server already in it! But in reality a $30 colo slot is hard to find so I stayed at the $49 suggestion.
One more proposed requirement: any colo offer has to include the street address of the data center! There is actually a provider on WHT who wants you to sign up and buy a slot before they will tell you where the DC is. Excuse me but if I'm supposed to put my own gear there, I have to know the location before I decide, just like renting an apartment. Telling me the city is not close enough.
@willie If you find a colo at $30 or below in the U.S. let me know. I will move my 40 a month dacentec.
I say $60 p/m for US and EU and $80 p/m for APAC.
I'd like to suggest a basic reference setup: 1U, 220W (1A @ 220V / 2A @ 110V), 1Gbps uplink, 10TB @ 1Gbps
I don't know of any regular offers like that but I remember promos here and there. Also I'm open to offers smaller than the usual 1U, 110 volt, 1 amp. I'd call that a reference setup with 10TB on a 100 mbit port: Beagle's version with 220W and a 1gbit uplink is well above minimal.
As for me, raspberry pi doesn't count, but $30 for 1/2U or NUC sized space, 0.5 amps (55 watts), 5TB at 100 mbit, and /64 ipv6 with no ipv4 would sound pretty good. I'd probably pay $49 for it if I could get it near here (colo space is very expensive where I am).
Per Jack's suggestion, I'm up for an experimental "post your colo offers here, no limits" thread to see what happens. I don't remember the IP thread though.
Agreed. Rather than clogging up the site with colo offer threads I think a single colo thread with no limits (as long as they get a provider tag) is the way to go here.
Ok I'm gonna start the thread, no limits, providers only.
Added: it is up: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/144176/providers-post-your-colo-offers-here-no-limits
It's in the offers section and unsunk. That seemed better than putting it in General since it's supposed to stay around for a while, but if someone wants to move or sink it that's fine with me.
I hardly think a handful of offers in a week will 'clog' the site
we get more necro posts then we are likely to see colo offers.
Closing this one then, if its popular I will just get some rules around it and make it a separate offer category.
