Hetzner cloud recent speed tests

Anybody can provide recent Hetzner cloud speed tests (network, HDD)?
I wonder if its worth to use it for US traffic. I read there were some routing issues and slow transfer speeds to the US locations.

  • I'll run a test later but I've used Hetzner for years and they've always been slow to US locations.

Thanks, not a good news for me. I like them as a company because of great service and support, unfortunately, no DC in the US.

  • I have CX11 Nürnberg and CX11 Falkenstein benches. They are from 29th January 2018.

  • Those benches only have download speed, not upload, ISTM.

Thanks. It's interesting why IPv4 to Atlanta is slow on both instances while the IPv6 is Ok.

The Speedtest.net and ServerScope.io results have some upload benchmarks.

IPv4 to Atlanta is at Coloat while IPv6 to Atlanta is Linode. In my experience, Coloat has always been super slow, I have seen as low as ~500KB/s for machines in the US.

Hmm, interesting, but I don't see any US destinations. European destinations do work great.

    ckissi said: IPv4 to Atlanta

Unless I missed something there is no measurement to Atlanta. The "Atlanta" entry in Unixbench is a download from Atlanta. The opposite direction is likely to be slower.

Whoops, that is my mistake :P

I will go spin up a few Hetzner Cloud servers and get US locations benched.

That's correct, both entries for Atlanta in the FreeVPS Bench are downloads from there - not uploads.

  • I have a Hetzner server at Falkenstein and Kimsufis at Roubaix and BHS. Hetzner to US is bad enough that if I want to do a big transfer, I sometimes do Hetzner->Roubaix->BHS->US destination.

    Thanks, I would appreciate this.

  • I did some benchmarks in a box at Nürnberg.

    Speedtest.net to Speedtest.net at NYC, NY: http://www.speedtest.net/result/7264514632.png

Speedtest.net to Quadranet at Los Angeles, CA: http://www.speedtest.net/result/7264515504.png

Speedtest.net to Tzulo at Chicago, IL: http://www.speedtest.net/result/7264520479.png

Overall, not amazing. If you have some other locations / scripts you'd like me to use, that's no problem.

  • Those speeds are far in excess of anything I've ever gotten to any US/Canada destination. My usual one is BuyVM Las Vegas but the same thing happens with others including OVH BHS.

  • Thanks, hmmm. LA only 40mbps, that's really slow. Also, pings are quite high to the US. 223ms to NY which is the east coast is very high I think.

  • ckissi said: Also, pings are quite high to the US. 223ms to NY which is the east coast is very high I think.

Yeah it varies but I usually get more like 140ms to west coast. Something is weird with that test.

  • willie said: Yeah it varies but I usually get more like 140ms to west coast. Something is weird with that test.

That's a problem with Speedtest I guess. Some of the hosts have really awful networks which can result in odd speeds/pings.

  • I've been running casual tests over my residential IP in Western Canada over the last few years, and I've noticed it get much better in the last 6-12 months. Not sure if that's translated to an improvement elsewhere in Canada / US, but it's definitely better than it was for me.

  • @willie said:

Actually, 140ms is not that bad. I'm just worrying about the big difference in transfer speed to different US locations. Maybe routing issues?

Thanks! Can you please do the tests once again so we can compare? eg. transfer from/to Seattle is extremely slow according to the results (28mbps)

  • Wow, that's a very good result I think, even the ping is quite good. What cloud instance is this?

2.33mbps!! that's extreme number. There must be some routing issue. It would be interesting to traceroute to that IP in Seattle.
Can you provide me with the Speedtest ID of that test server? I would test it with some of my US located servers. Maybe the test server is simply overloaded on downstream.

Doing a quick lookup of Speedtest.net servers owned by Ookla in Chicago gives me server IDs 10670 and 10923.

Hetzner doesn't have great routing to most of the US, especially Hetzner's Finland location (which routes everything to the US through Frankfurt). It does depend on your location and ISP though, because I get better pings to Helsinki than to my dedi in Nürnberg.

  • I live in Canada, used there services a couple years ago - Connection to Canada was horrid. 275ms pings. Never looked back.

  • Ping from Hetzner (Nuremberg 1 DC 3) to Buyvm VPS located in New York 84ms! Tried also Buyvm to Hetzner (just for sure). The same 84ms. That's really good I think.

I've used speedtest to measure speed in different locations and the upload is between 25mbps - 250mbps. Those 25mbps are probably caused by test server as I've got quite good results also for SF locations (over 180mbps).

  • I have just deployed another EUR4.90 plan, if you need any tests, let me know. Work starts on it tomorrow.
