I have been using Linode for couple of years and I encountered the backup failure issue for multiple times. Every time it costs one day or two to get all things resolved, 10 days are weird.
Linode's backup service is not that simple. It will probe the guest file system and do a file-level incremental backup. Only specific file systems are supported.
What a scary way to do backups.

@jarland is right and we are struggling to stay small.
How small is good enough, is hard to say, depends on many factors, but when shit happens and you cant sort within a couple of hours, something is too big and if multiple issues happen same time or you cant even think of moving because the whole house of cards will come down in flames, then you are too big for the organization culture.
