CentOS is fine for learning linux. I switched from Debian to CentOS when I was learning because I found it easier. Especially the package manager which is arguably the first most important thing to learn. Yum is quite simple and just works.

You don't have a eth0/eth1 device, create a eth0 file
Enter IP Address, HWADDR, eth, type,etc in ifconfig-eth0 and then restart network(command: service network restart)

Try doing an ifup eth0
