Shardhost Second Birthday Specials (Annual KVM from $10)

edited June 2013 in Offers

Shardhost is a UK LTD company (reg 07679837) that has been providing hosting services since June 2011. We currently serve over 3500 clients. We own all of our VPS hardware.

All services are currently being offered out of our racks in Dallas, Texas (Colo4Dallas DC via CC).

We've had a great experience with all of our clients from Lowendtalk/Lowendbox so far and want to continue to develop further hosting relationships here.

Some reviews of our service:

Plans come with one IPv4, additional IPv4 are $1/mo. IPv6 is not currently available.

Blah VAT, will you remove it if I supply my VAT number?

  • PacketVMPacketVM Member, Host Rep

The link for the first package is correct, but others just prompt to log in.

Looks like the other links are still from when you had HostBill or something.

It's the link for the 512MB KVM that does not work.

Btw...typo in the main header of KVM VPSes... It says "KVM VDS"

@shardhost i'm only getting 70kB/sec to the UK with the 10MB test file. Is this right? Seems a bit low. Is the link for the 100mb file right? Can't download.
However, the deals are excellent VFM, want to buy one, just the test file speed is putting me off.

  • On each of your order links, it says 100Mbps port speed. Is this true? Are the yearly plans limited to 100Mbps port speed?

Not a problem, as long as it validates

This is intended, to distinguish our OpenVZ and KVM products

Links should also be fixed now

We're located in the UK and are getting a much higher download speed than that. What ISP are you using? PM me for an alternative download file within the same network

Annual plans are 100Mbps port speed. Only the monthly is 1Gbps

  • @shardhost - PM'ed. Can you upload custom ISO's for KVM?

We're happy to upload any non windows ISOs. Most distros are templates, we have ISOS for things like FreeBSD and Vyatta

anyone has a guide for so I can install ubuntu with gui and access it with rdp all within 256mb ram?:)

  • Just a note, although our Monthly plan has 100GB storage and I guess moves it into storage offer territory, this is a standard VPS plan and can be used for whatever you like within our TOS

A serverbear report for the people : http://serverbear.com/benchmark/2013/06/16/XPCtc3ZDhm6ro2HG

I can only speak for myself, but I'm very happy with the performance. I've got a desktop running with the help of @ShardHost @ 80mb memory used, even firefox can be used without any memory issues. Could be great to use for some data-entry outsourcing.

Thanks for the report and the comment. I'd just like to state, that these nodes are not full at the moment and although we run a tight ship on performance YMMV

I think it's impossible to run a window manager with just 256 MB Ram. I could be wrong.

Shardhost linked me to this http://www.vandorp.biz/2012/01/installing-a-lightweight-lxdevnc-desktop-environment-on-your-ubuntudebian-vps/

    worked out great.

Just to add, that I am also getting very low speeds with other hosts in the dallas area/same DC and may be to do with routing. So my comments above about slow speeds may not apply to you. Anyway fantastic offer. fill your boots!

Thanks for the clarification. I suspect some saturation at Linx to be the cause. Hopefully will clear up soon for you. If not possibly shoot a message to your ISP.

Can run windows managers with 128MB - check out bodhi linux, but prefer windows xp pro on 128MB, as performs better once all the rubbish is stripped out eg MicroXP

  • @shardhost - how long is the offer open for? I'll check for routing issues and grab one later on in the week!

The offer is open for as long as we have stock. To give you some idea, we have just under 1TB of RAM to sell on this offer.

I don't think they allow windows to be hosted at all :(

@ztec - i was talking about a local machine/pc when saying about xp. I've ran xp pro on 128MB at home with no problems, even ram it on a P2, 350MHz, 128MB RAM, without problems, as a server/nas/bittorrent client. XP will even run with 64MB RAM according to M$.

@shardhost - will have to think, I follow the following rules to stop buying things I'll never use/need:-
    1) can I afford it?
    2) do I need it?
    3) can I get it cheaper?

This applies especially with PC type stuff, I've just bought 4 thin clients that I don't really need :-(

I know the feeling. It'll still be here if you decide you need it. And if it's not shoot me a PM

And what if I want windows 3.11?

  • And what if I want windows 3.11?

I'd recommend QEMU>OS/2 Warp>windows3.1 (I'd also recommend making a backup of any important data just in case your VPS gets suspended by your host) :P

I bought a 256MB for a DNS server early this morning.
