Looking for a high RAM VPS
Hey everyone,
I haven't looked at providers for a while - I've largely been happy with Linode/DO for the last year or two, however, I'm looking to see if there's a better 'bang for the buck' option without too many sacrifices.
I'm providing semi-managed WordPress - Plesk with a load of optimisation tweaks, caching to the moon, CDN, etc. So, not a typical 'I'm hosting Minecraft and need a lot of RAM'.
So, I have a few key requirements - It needs to be hosted within the EU, it needs to be KVM based, and the more RAM the merrier, as I will be using it. A reputable provider is a must.
The budget is not exactly set, however, my current alternative would be to rent a dedicated server, OVH/Hetzner style - Issue for that is that a lower-end server typically has a slower CPU, lack of RAID, etc. Hence why I'm looking at what's available on the VPS end of things.
Any suggestions/offers?
Cheers

Do you have a lower bound on the amount of RAM you need? At least some amount?
Lower bound would be around 6GBish. I mean I'd theoretically be comfortable with 4GB at the moment, but I'd like as much breathing room as possible
Ramnode doubled the ram on their standard lineups recently, so would definitely consider the NL location.
Can also grab a slice™ from @Francisco in LU - which is a dedicated chunk of an E3 box with unmetered bandwidth.
If you could live with OVZ, @cam246 has an amazing deal on an 8G unit.
Go back to your crappy cars he said must be KVM
Just for that, I'm going to send you my dead fuel pump through the post, and I'm not going to bother emptying it first.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Francisco
Thank you for the mention,
Cam
netcup of course... very much bang for your buck ;-)
there are some older specials still available (though not directly advertised through their website anymore)
like this one: https://www.netcup.eu/bestellen/produkt.php?produkt=1557
prices include german VAT, so might be deductable for your business.
also get an additional 5€ off your first order with a discount code from my signature :-P
:O
Are you personally using any of those netcup servers? If so, could you provide any benchmarks/personal anecdotes on the reliability of their service?
I have plenty of available RAM in NL if you want a KVM there.
What's the budget? How much storage do you need (this will influence the price).
Feel free to PM me.
As it stands, I'm browsing reviews of NetCup... so essentially it's a match/beat situation unless I find out they're garbage. I'm cool with annual payments if that makes things a little easier.
I don't need much storage at all, WordPress media libraries are offloaded. I'd say around 25GB to stay on the safe side with server logs and whatnot.
With going up to 8 GB of ram You may want to look at a intro dedicated server as well.
Vultr generally has more ram than Linode/DO for the same priced instance, I think.
But, you are probably better off with a small dedi, that will give you tons of growing space. Look at worldstream.nl for some cheap ones.

have you checked out https://www.ovh.com/us/vps/vps-cloud-ram.xml ? 6GB for $11 USD isn't too bad at all, and the CPU preforms just as you'd expect with no lags or delay, I was honestly blown-away by the performance of their entire VPS range.
There's also VPS-SSD-3 with 2 cores, 40gb ssd, and 8gb ram for $13.49, but for what you're doing the high availability stuff in the cloud series might actually be useful.
We have the following KVM VPS that you might be interested in.
Number of Cores: 1
RAM: 4 GB
Disk Space: 50 GB
Disk Type: SSD
Bandwidth: Unmetered
Port Speed: 1 Gbps
DDoS Protection: YES | 250 Gbps
Number of IPs: 1
Location: New Jersey
Price: $7.00/mo
Billing period: Monthly
Coupon: KVM30OFF
Bravo Package - https://spetsnazhost.com/cart.php?gid=3
sure. I actually have three services with them, signed up a year ago or something like that, but use them in production for about 6 month now. They have been in the german market for years...
there have been some discussion here at LET like https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/72927/netcup-eu-root-server-ssd-reviews-monster-deal/p1 or https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/93440/netcup-nice-offer/p1
they changed their bw policy since and the new products come with 10TB free before they may limit the connection. so far I never ran into that situation, even with their older services where stricter limit had been told before, so more likely some soft limit anyways.
geekbench of their xmas special, 1 ded. core E5-2670 v3: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/2021105
geekbench of their storage special, 2 ded core E5-2670 v3: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/2021310
Upload Speeds
I lately also took one of their smaller VPS offer with 4 shared cores, 4 GB which are supposed to be on 100MBit, yet speeds are quite around 500MBit and geekbench isn't bad at all https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/2220930 (but no AES)
speeds and IO of disks are amongst the best I have seen, steady in the long run 300-400 MB/s
I do have dedis and vserver with a lot of providers like hetzner, ovh, online.net, ultravps zxhost, leaseweb, buyvm and so on and all of those are great and doing their job to my expectations!
it often depends on what and where you need your services... I am from germany so it might make sense why I need and use (and recommend) more services nearby ;-)
if you need an order link for any other of their vps or rootserver range let me know, as long as those are working you save up to ~20% on each of the actually listed prices ^^
keep in mind, you have to choose a contract term and they expect you to cancel at least 30 days before the term ends, otherwise it is extended automatically
( also feel free to use one of my shameless referal 5€ coupons: 36nc14902107589 / 36nc14902107586 )
that said the public cloud products of OVH like already recommended by @ethancedrik and @willie I also use and can recommend, their disk IO and BW is more limited and they may be a bit more expensive, but have been reliable since years (at least for me)
We have a KVM offer with 4 Cores, 8GB Ram, 500GB Raid10 Storage, 10Gbit Shared Uplink and DDoS-Protection for 15€ / month available at our Frankfurt location:
https://www.kms-hosting.com/rootserver
can you do the same special for your Root2G? like 4,50 p.m. ;-)
always tempted to give your service a try ^^
Hi,
I'm a spammer who has repeatedly evaded bans at LowEndTalk. This is my third account. I'd like to share with you my company that will most likely be in the dead pool within the next two months. I am a complete scammer, and you should stay far away from my company serverwala.org. Since I can't read the rules and repeatedly create new accounts to get around them, I will no longer be given the courtesy of having my name cleared by the removal of my threads/posts.

We can go as high as 32 GB RAM/per/VPS maybe more if you let us know by ticket system...
Maybe we will do a short-time special offer for other services within the next month, depends a bit how fast we will get new hardware up and running ;-)
great, will be visiting your page more often now. would really like to see something like that :-)
Stick with DO/Linode, so they can keep you happy as you said. Or go with Vultr, they offer more RAM for the same price as DO/Linode.
VPS SSD KVM
Cores (2.4 ГГц) 1
RAM 16384 Mb
SSD 5 Gb
IPv4 1
21 USD
Damn, thats shit.
maybe that's how much they usually cost in russia? but yeah if that was in BHS or somewhere like that it would be way too costly compared to what other providers are offering
Are you still looking for a VPS?
