  • Scp? Try download via https. Isps usually do not throttle https traffic. Also increase / optimize tcp window and other variables in sysctl.conf in vps (google it)

    Yep. No MTR to and from results that was ran but it all seems to be pointing to the OP. OP seems overly focused on simple speed tests rather than running some testing that might give him answers.

    I will post the MTr results. Just got a new born so pretty hectic.

    MTR to the server and MTR from the server to your IP. This is basic troubleshooting.

    @rivermigue these are the trace route results

    Can you tell if there is a problem? Right now, during peak hours my SCP only maxes to 200KB/second. in the morning (non-peak) I can hit 1.6MB/s. Still slow compared to the speed I get when wget-ing a file from ovh.proof.ca

    Hi, below are the results. Can you tell if there is a problem?

    I have already sent this to OVH support and they told me everything's fine.. Thanks in advance.

    yolo_me said: when I download a file from my OVH canada VPS to my home using SCP, my speed starts at 3-4MB/s but it gets throttled down to 500KB/second.

    The first thing to check, try downloading with HTTP/HTTPS instead.

    I installed nginx on a docker and downloaded something over HTTP. It is still super slow at 300-400KB/s. The thing is, I try to download two things, one from HTTP and one over SCP simultaneously and both of them experience 300-400KB/s. Not sure if that helps, so it seems they are not throttling me for the whole connection but for each connection? "They" could be ISP or OVH. Still haven't narrowed that down. Any help interpreting the data I posted is appreciated.

    I've consistently gotten the whole 100mbps from my ovh vps-ssd at bhs. Just got a kimsufi in fr and also get 100mbps but haven't had it long.

    Can you kindly send me a test file to download to try my speed? I can also send you a file link to see how fast my vps is to your home connection.. thanks.

    I tried downloading through HTTP only and there is no improvement on speed. Also, if I use my kimsufi france box I get 11.2MB/second, but I think they are on the same OVH data centre.

    Check your pm.

  • Hello Everyone,

    I am downloading my speed test file on 4:33 AM east coast time and I am seeing good speed of 2-3MB/second. I am concluding for now that on peak hours, some pipe gets throttled... WIll try to debug some more later.

    put these to /etc/sysctl.conf

    net.core.rmem_max = 16777216

    net.core.wmem_max = 16777216

    net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 16777216

    net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 16384 16777216

    save it
    then
    sudo sysctl -p
    or
    sysctl -p (as root user)

    then, try again.

    http is most throttled connection type.
    https on the other hand, less or not throttled because facebook/google and all big websites uses https.

    What's interesting about hop #20? Don't it just mean the router on my end is not accepting/sending ping replies?

    Also, on the first one, what does hop 11-12 likely mean?

  • No. Don't assume my observation. Look at your best/avg/worst.

    Just a side note: you keep posting ovh.proof.ca - OVH doesn't own proof.ca, hence your big change in ping on one MTR there.

    Use - bhs.proof.ovh.net or proof.ovh.ca

    There's a lot of losses here. Is this a red flag?

    Considering they start from the first hop, it's mostly a problem with your router/modem/internet connection in general.

    Scp? Try download via https. Isps usually do not throttle https traffic. Also increase / optimize tcp windowm and other variables in sysctl.conf in vps (google it)

    I tried downloading through HTTP only and there is no improvement on speed. Also, if I use my kimsufi france box I get 11.2MB/second, but I think they are on the same OVH data centre.

    http is most throttled connection type.
    https on the other hand, less or not throttled because facebook/google and all big websites uses https.

    Just tried HTTPS and it is the same speed.

  • Maybe your ISP is throttling you?
    Care to provide https test links for us?

  • I noticed too many hops in your MTR traceroute. Maybe your ISP pick a route that is overloaded by other customers.

    You will have to contact your ISP and explain the situation

    I don't think your ISP will do that for home/residential internet customer.
