Maybe the ability to make encrypted partition on a KVM or such virtualization.

I wouldn't believe in that, it's still too easy for the host to get into the vm if you're worried about that. Better to just never let the vm/container see unencrypted data.

Openvz storage has worked fine for me at multiple hosts, so I don't have any problem with it. I don't really understand the objections to it.

Use client-side encryption with checksums if you really care about privacy and integrity of data. I use borgbackup.

    For luks,

You could also mount a block device from a huge volume file residing on a ovz vps via a kvm in same DC. ( something like https://bitbucket.org/hirofuchi/xnbd/wiki/Home)

    Thanked by 1deadbeef
  • @cociu : If you include 2gb+ ram and 2-4vcpu, it will be usable as personal seafile server (java app i think). Not many providers including enough RAM with storage vps.

Thanks for mentioning borg, I've been meaning to look into it. nbd to an ovz vps also sounds interesting, though cheap storage plans tend to have rather slow disk i/o (that's ok, it's archive data, I don't particularly want to pay for more iops). But, it's the same issue, any type of vm will be under the host's control: to use luks securely you at least need a dedi afaict.

Maybe you guys are onto something but I've basically felt that luks on kvm was a semi-meaningless half measure. I have a $3/month scaleway arm dedi that I've been planning to put some security stuff on, in preference to any type of vps.

  • Problem with any encryption done on a VPS is all you'd have to do is snapshot it including memory at the time the encrypted volume was mounted.

  • ready to order...

This. Listen to his advice. Install it, use it, thank us later.

btw @Hubic users. I had 8TB on Hubic and i was more or less happy, but then I noticed that some files got corrupted while uploading and it took me 3 months to download all of that, because they limit download to 10Mbit (even public links of your files share your 10Mbit limit!!).
So if you have to use Hubic, please check your files and have backups of your backups. And don't expect to quickly access a few hundred gigabytes when you need them.

I have ~1TB worth of personal backups (servers, pictures, videos, documents) and a few dozen TB linux isos on Google and Amazon
