but then everything is expensive there, i guess brandnew stuff sure cost more
800 is probably the max, but cheaper the better of course (provided the specs are met)
Thanks, price from Newegg?
Yeah, the shiping is going to cost more, as it is buying the items seperately and they can be found for cheaper on ebay.
However, personally I would go with something similar to:
2x http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-Quad-Core-L5420-2-5GH-12MB-133-3-SLARP-/221096938358?pt=US_Server_CPUs_Processors&hash=item337a678b76#ht_500wt_1288 - 36$
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-490-GU083-Motherboard-DUAL-XEON-Systemboard-LGA771-TESTED-/180936764467?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2a20abec33 - 39$
Not absolutely sure about chasis though, but something along the line of this could work probably: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-PowerEdge-R200-1U-Server-Case-Chassis-Power-Supply-CX251-XH225-/270836574907?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0f1e2abb#ht_1961wt_1037
RAM: http://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-8X2GB-DDR2-MEMORY-RAM-PC2-5300-ECC-FBDIMM-DIMM-/140505472432?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item20b6c75db0
The RAID card would be additional 90-120$
The HDDs theirself would be around 40$ each for enterprice SATA 250GB. However you might be able to find some decent WD RE3 in warranty at 30$ each.
Can not guarantee that the above configuration would work, but something along that lines would be quite cheap and good. You can get this configuration pre-built at around 300-350 with HDDs included and a shitty onboard RAID, that might do the trick for you.
is servermonkey.com legit? have people actually bought from that site?
I've read reviews about them. They are legit.
bought a couple 15k sas drives with dell pe1950 trays... lets see how it turns out. pricing is really good.
Good ol' L5420s.
Just to drop something in, Anyone near the manchester area, I'm looking for a switch, 24 Ports, and hoping for pickup today.[nvm, got one]

anyone knows any contact with colocrossing? i got a good deal in Chicago but Colocrossing's Buffalo location is closer to me, but they never respond to sales emails.
Something is not okey than. I had a response about Buffalo even on weekend day. Had to wait 12 hours, though, but completly understandable.
Tried it as well, and sales@colocrossing
They are currently online in live chat, why not there?
That's my suspicion as well, but then they host LEB and LET so I thought they should be OK.
Tried, and I got a message after inputting my details:
We will get back to you blah blah...
I even added them on AIM as well, no one's talking to me,.
They are great... I will be coloing with them soon..
I meant something is wrong on your side.. :P
I meant something is wrong on your side.. :P
Just tried to call them, they said Jon will get back to me...eventually
Send me a PM, I have a few servers in the Buffalo location and colo available.
sent
Just noticed I forgot to reply this message, their Proliant is a really old model that does not come with iLO, and the buydown cost for that server is 300 bucks, and you have to ship it yourself, and therefore it definitely does not make any sense to buy there and ship it elsewhere.
I'd like to interject and point out that the SE-series Proliant servers are not that old, but they're meant for a different kind of audience: 'enterprise' clusters that are controlled by a hypervisor on a per-node level.
They only have one ethernet port, one power supply, and no raid controller or ILO. The point being that they live in a group of other servers, and if one dies, the hypervisor marks it dead, cluster keeps going until someone on-hand can physically look at the unit.
Don't buy a Dell CS-series, or HP SE-series, no matter the price. Ask @Jacob for his experience.
From the top of my head, It has 2 Ethernet ports, 1 PSU is right(Torx Screws(smaller then average), If buying used make sure the screw can come loose, so you can switch the PSUs).
iLO cards can be picked up for £12 or so from eBay, Other then that, The HP SE Series are solid, and cheap.
They are scalable chassis, from like DL160 Generations. but if you have the budget then stretch to a newer model. DL120 G7, or DL320 G6, both have 4 bays and are <£500
So I was trying to pick up the config @Zen has suggested but unfortunately server monkey is out of the G7...I could get one of these:
http://www.servermonkey.com/hp-proliant-dl360-g5-configure.html
Could you suggest some specs based on this config?
Thanks!
Seems like a pretty decent plan thought.. I pay $65/month and after the first year I can continue to colo @$40/month for an 8 core cpu with 16gb Ram.. does anyone know a better deal than this?

@earl
2 months ago in a chat with William @ dacentec I got a better deal with you
Sorry what do you mean?
Sorry, mistyped...
than you*
As a response of:
@Alex_LiquidHost
I'm curious want to share the plan you got from william?
@zhuanyi
Honestly I don't think it makes sense to pay $800 for a server and colo it.. considering you still have to pay $40/month colo fees for your $800 server.
If you rent the Dedi @ $65 your basically only paying $25 for the server and if anything breaks they will replace it for you, so no additional cost on your part!
What does everything think of this deal? Looks like a great price as earl was saying.
I wonder how their network is and such.
This is I believe 65+ collocation fee. Yes? No?
