I've never heard about ExitLag, and it doesn't seem trustworthy. I don't want to install weird software, but I might give it a look. Also, is ExitLag a VPN provider?

For ddos protection (somewhat, it's mostly bruteforce protection) check out fail2ban or crowdsec.
