This is because of the building codes since Hurricane Andrew, they started in just Miami-Dade but I'm pretty sure most of the state is the same now (least the southern part), you have to build the first floor out of concrete and doors must open outwards. Florida building codes are pretty weird sometimes, lots of odd little restrictions and they change quite often.
What if I told you my major at the University is Civil Engineering?
Also, Colorado, California, and Pennsylvania are some of the biggest hot-spots for Civil Engineers.
