Speedtest CLI to quickly check network speeds
I found an interesting article about how to use speedtest.net for network speed testing through the command line. It's quick and easy to set up and use.
Here are results using "closest server" defaults:
Here are results using a randomly selected server in Chicago:
My VPS is located in Buffalo, NY over IPV4.
Obviously, this is not rigorous testing, but it's the same service that most PC users use to quickly check network speed.

That's known for years. Are you awake from ten-years sleep?
No, just very new to the VPS world and thought other newbies might be interested since it's not widely advertised.

I missed that post. When did a search on "speedtest", it returned many posts that were irrelevant to my interest. Google turned up a nice answer for me and I shared it. No harm, no foul.
And also its very easy to fudge those tests
Yeah, and quite a few of the 'hosts' have slow ports.
Remember speedtest.net is focused on home connections, so you probarly can't max your port speed. Also it uses IP Geo location which can be incorrect.
@wych - I've demonstrated that one many times. As well as the man-in-the-middle performance 'enhancement'
Pretty much OOKLA charges ~$1,000 USD / Year for companies to use their testing infrastructure with high quality tests. Their free public testing on speedtest.net seems to be saturated most of the time, especially when trying to test with gbps lines.

Ignore the haters, @jbarr. I didn't know about it. Thanks!
I posted an article about this in feb last year.

You should read it sometime

Good job being a dick to a newbie. I hope you feel proud of yourself.
I didn't know about it either. It was helpful to me to learn about it for the first time. Thank you JBarr!
To the others who already knew about it, you could have written something like, "Great hint! Here are some links to earlier discussions on the same topic that may teach you more about it."
There's also https://github.com/blackdotsh/curl-speedtest which uses GNU core utils + curl.
@emg, meh. I've quickly learned the culture here--I've got thick skin.
@jbaar i use it from time to time. is great to check the speed on other servers.
