In the past, I use OsTicket with custom theme. Work like a charm and easy to use.
I'm enjoying reamaze (http://www.reamaze.com/) using their intergration on WHMCS to replace it's ticket system.
The OP wasn't sure he wanted all the features of WHMCS...but it looks like the cost is a whole lot cheaper than paying for ZenDesk.
I really appreciate the feedback. I'm glad most of them have trial periods. I'll have to check out a few.
