Custom SRV records for linux?

I'm working with an application that doesn't support SRV records but it would be useful if it did, so I was wondering if it's possible or if someone has already done something to translate SRV records as soon as they hit a linux server into whatever port it needs to go on?

Another way I thought about this is to proxy connections on a certain port but that doesn't work well unless a program can get the specific record used to connect
