Why are EU servers so cheap?

I've noticed that servers in the EU region are often cheaper than those in US regions. In the EU, you can buy an EPYC server or even NVMe for €2, but in the US, €2 usually only gets you an E5 with HDDs. I'm really curious as to why this is.

i think its mostly because of the competition in EU, especially germany and netherlands, there is alot of providers like hetzner, ovh etc offering cheap hardware and bandwidth so prices keep going down

in US things are bit different, colocation, bandwidth and ipv4 costs can be higher depending on the location also EU market is really competitive so providers have to keep their prices low to get customers

    thats just my opinion tho

there are a lot of middle-of-nowhere cities in the states that you're don't care or mind to run ancient xeon L5xxx with cheap power

Tafak. Did you saw fdcservers or nocix? USA has cheaper power then EU.

well not the cheapest ofc but for the hardware and specs they offer i think their prices are still pretty good compared to a lot of providers

  • Usually, but not always. For instance we can get $7/y in US  but not in EU.

Why is EU more diversified and advanced? Because of the competition between the countries in EU. Comparing to the US, it's not a bother if a website is on a E4, because is in US anyway.

fdcservers also couldn't compare to the EU's €2 EPYC server, and nocix, as I said, uses outdated hardware.

Which provider you have in mind?

i'd guess transit plays into it too. frankfurt and amsterdam have huge exchanges right there so bandwidth is cheap, while in the US the really cheap stuff tends to sit in a couple of places that are far from a lot of the users anyway

US thinks big. Their market is much more focussed on the big fish.

    You mean AI DCs?
The US has a lot more IPv4s so the prices for those are much lower than in the EU AND the power is cheaper.
Yet, in the EU prices are often at half for the same specs because traffic is much cheaper.
What kills the US hosts is the traffic, they have nowhere near the infrastructure the EU has regarding interconnectivity.
That interconnectivity and penetration in the EU stems from much higher population density and shorter distances, it allows countries like Romania to sell 6-8 Gbps capacity lines at 10 Eur a month. I don't think you have that anywhere else in the world.

    delete hetzner from cheap category.
