What are some competitively priced S3-compatible storage for personal backup?

I may use anything from 10 GB (to begin with) to 60-70GB.

I will be using it with kopia/restic (E2EE; all personal data PDFs, images, videos etc).

Since my storage amount is quite less I am looking for a PAYG pricing without a min-GB/TB commitment.

Also, how much should I worry about egress and API call prices as object storages charge for that as well?

  • @systemfreaks solid for me so far think min is 100GB but not 100%

  • Exoscale S3

  • Cloudflare R2.

Maybe you should try a LET provider

How about I disrupt the ObjectStorage (AWS3)

  • It's to note that he distributed, maybe still does, pirated content. So take that for what it's worth. Maybe it's the guy you're looking for, maybe not

Thanks for the mention! Yes, the minimum storage allocation is 100GB. Beyond that, you can scale up as needed.

Thank you for mentioning it. I tried their calculator but it wasn't clear on egress/api cost.

I have looked at it and it seems I may try this but I will have to find out what kind of API call amount tools like restic/kopia make for my small amount of GBs (from today's standards).

Since it's personal data (even though small) I wouldn't want to swtich storage hosts quite often and that is also why I am looking for pricing that's not very high and I understand it in my usage context.

Yes, min is indeed 100 GB. While it's not terribly costly I do not want to use that. Otherwise I might have stuck with borgbase and rsync really. But thanks for mentioning. And I must add at 100GB it's almost 1/4th of CF R2.

That post/etc seems very odd if I may say so.

I have treid OVH for a project. Their pricing is really great and it worked. Also you get 1st month free (up to 200 USD or Eur, don't remember), so you can at least try if it suits your needs ;)

  • Backblaze B2, works wonders.

Backblaze B2 has no hidden minimum charges, no minimum storage duration, and offers 10GB free.

    100GB costs roughly $0.70/month ($6.95/TB/month).

No API call fees either. iirc they removed those sometime mid year.

  • iDrive e2 has a ten gigs free, and the 1TB tier is $2.50/terabyte for the first year. I think it's $5/terabyte after the first year. I've been happy with them.

I use Restic on a couple of apps/projects, and push the backups to Cloudflare R2. It's dead simple. R2 is S3 compatible.

B2 is awesome. I use it already. I am looking for another cloud backup destination – my second.

R2 indeed seems interesting once I understand how those API calls would matter with these backup tools (esp. the first time backup whenever everything goes to it). Because those download/upload APIs can really get expensive. I may have to try some sort of dry-run or so and gauge the cost. (@Dupondt this is what I meant by "what kind of API call amount" i.e I don't want to get hit by that billing if any of these tools chunk in such a way that uploads become rather numerous very fast)

Scaleway is something else I've come across on reddit. Will check that as well.

I need more than that much less than their min storage plan. I had already checked it, it won't work for me.

So far I've tried B2, R2 (hot), Scaleway Glacier (long term) and OVH Cold Archive (cheaper than Scaleway). I read Scaleway's hot Object Storage is also cheap if my memory serves me well.

You could cloud replicate B2 but if that is not to your liking then CF R2 might work, if this is cold then you have much more options.

You can use AI to look up the pricing between all and easily figure out what fits in your budget.

@LEBUserJoe thanks for the kind words, glad it's working well for you!

@Devil understood, you want to pay only for what you use, no minimum. Thanks for the feedback.

On your API question: restic and kopia pack data into chunks of about 16-40 MB, so 70 GB is only a few thousand uploads.

We have no API or egress fees, so the bill is fixed and has no surprises. If the 100 GB minimum is still a dealbreaker, that's fair, and it's useful input for us.

cant go wrong with rsync.net or borgbase.

Thank you. I've awlays been fascinated by cold storage and how cheap it can get with many providers. Esp. since I am aiming to have 2–4 cloud backups. I know this may sound like an overkill :-) But in my defence I have really trimmed down my data amount and whatever is left is kinda my precious. The need is just this as of now ~10GB (I won't want to lose at all! Ever. Then there's 50GB and even though that's also personal data, if I lose it I won't lose my sleep over it.

So I was thinking that maybe I will backup

    • that ≈50GB to 1 or 2 cold object storage (barely grows/changes)
    • that ≈10GB to 2-3 hot object storage (few things grow change frequently but tiny amounts – like my text notes and journal files, my .dotfiles (which takes important .dot things into it and it remains backed up) - frequent but some days or weeks just bytes. Then there are bills, invoices - not too frequent. (B2 exists; borgbase exists -> will be replaced to R2 maybe; will add 1 more most pribably or not – possibly scaleway)

I never thought of this before. This suddenly hit me after reading you comment that why the hell am I looking for 70GB of hot object storage while all I need is 10–20GB of hot storage and it will be cheap almost anywhere for this tiny amount. And for the 50GB in cold storage somewhere I will explore how to keep some sort of local cache or handy so that the next time I need to recover from a laptop crash or after setting up afresh it sort of knows what to add to wihout costing me a lot by trying to access stored data – basically I will have to do some homework here. Maybe find some blogs etc (or let an LLM lose on this).

    Thanks a lot.

Thank you. Very kind of you. As for your pricing model. I guess that's pretty fine. Not many in today's time will walk around with just 10 GB of vaulable personal data

Today 10GB is less than people's WhatsApp cache storage (if they have not cleared it) within 6 months

    Hello,

We have no kyc object storage at : https://buckets.ninja
    However minimum commitment is 1TB.

your prices are insane regardless, can purchase triple redundant S3 from major providers at this price

Does it have to be S3 compatible, or does it just have to be compatible with kopia/restic? More options open up if you can use SFTP or run something on a VPS.

Hetzner storage box starts at $4/month for 1TB and they explicitly list restic as a supported use case. It's not S3-compatible though. https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/

GreenCloudVPS have 500GB storage for $25/year (~$2.08/month). It's just a storage VPS so you can run whatever you want on it. For restic, you can run rest-server on it. https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/storage-kvm-sale + https://github.com/restic/rest-server

I think it would be better for my use case. This also gives me more options to choose from. That's the reason I am moving away from borg (at least until borg2 arrives). I also want it to be really about api based storage access and nothing else, not even a little bit of maintenance or setup.

  • @Devil said:

Hetzner Storage Box is like that. It's not a VPS; it's SSH access to a shared environment, with a bunch of stuff preinstalled in the environment (like servers for Borgbackup, Restic, etc). No maintenance needed.
