rex: a media server for the Plex apps that stores no files, so it needs almost no disk

I made rex, a media server for the official Plex apps, written from scratch in Rust. It owns no files. Movies and shows stay on any web server, a storage box or another source you write yourself, and every Plex app streams them from there when you press play. Nothing is downloaded and nothing is scanned, so it needs almost no disk.

  • Several sources fill the same Movies and TV Shows libraries.
  • No Plex Pass. Remote playback in Plex Web and converting video work on free accounts.
  • With jellyfin-ffmpeg a converted 1080p film starts in about 2 seconds on a small Intel GPU.
  • rex fixes the timing of the subtitle you pick when it's off.

It's free for personal use and the source is public. There are nightly builds for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Debrid has it's own file-system app, this has re-invented the wheel with less features, and less backend support.

Not to mention InfiDysk also exists for use-net you have vibe-coded yet another program not needed or fixing anything not already done.

Waste of your time and tokens stop.

Regarding the other trash metadata support AIOStreams exists for bridging streamio apps to Plex / JellyFin etc. (With 1000's more app suport, and direct streamio / silo app intergration) you have created a plugin system on-top of an existing plugin system making all existing plugins not work so braindead.

Reason why AIOStreams actually useful is it uses the existing plugin format making everything compatible.

(For anyone not into streaming, this is a remake of pre-existing large apps that leverage service like Real-debrid (Which cache torrent / usenet media) that can be searched for via hashes, or .torrent or .nzb files if cached the debrid service your using provides you a direct HTTP download no unpacking etc.)

    yup

I originally wrote it with Python but now it's Rust and is AI

    And it's completely useless.

Many of the singular streamio addons but your entire project to shame, also open sourced wrote before AI.

    Zurg, AIOStreams, InfiDysk, Altmount, Gelato.

You are re-inventing the wheel when there are much better stack of projects to achieve this in a stable manner allowing real hosted plex, jellyfin or mimicked API's.

yes, but they are no longer used and out-dated facts.

I just looked through this entire rex + zurg combo and well it's dire. You could of made it work within the Streamio eco-system yet you purposely refused. Alienating the majority of the media community.

AIOStreams + InfiDysk, is 100x what this is.

Yes they are, you are actively used a large DB for torrent / usenet hashes.

And Zurg is heavily used by a lot of users before the large interest in the streamio-area of media.

But Zurg has had it's historical problems for a long time, and you must be aware of them. You must understand why the community has put lot of focus into other projects of this nature that achieve the same with no prior indexing, or health-checks.

Just explain to be how "Rex" solves what AIOStreams & Infidysk does not (AIOStreams can do everything itself for the record with a compatible plugin system)

Did I hate on zurg? no i actually added it to my list of community leveraged projects. but Rex is not a solution it's a nightmare and you clearly never hosted Plex servers as the amount of bans from this will be incredible :)

People can mimick Plex API for years not new, same with jellyfin.

  • @LEBUserJoe said: Just explain to be how "Rex" solves what AIOStreams & Infidysk does

you cannot use them on your ps5 or roku or other platforms. only Plex can do that

I've been working on this since late August and all my testing were done using my main Plex account that has lifetime pass

i don't know about "hate" but why you have so much to say about a project you haven't used? why not just move on?

Yes as I said to you, mimicking plex is not new and when done privately = no issue, you are not a small site once plex sniffs this project they will target ban your whole userbase, and you will be responsible as i've now warned you i've been a plex and jellyfin user for over a decade plex has banned be several times I know them well.

Go on /plexmediashare on reddit and ask anyone that has tried to make money selling plex this is a huge no no.

And no, it's because it's yet another AI project whipped up to solve well nothing. in fact I would happily bet i'm right on my statement about plex. Zurg was a fantastic project you helped shaped the streaming space for the record. this is just not the direction Zurg should of gone it's sad as a previous Zurg user.

And as you couldn't share a unique fact about Rex that the already majorily popularly and very stable and light-weight AIOStreams cannot. They even have a UI they don't need to deal with the cmd line :), entire jellyfin mimicked API included (Not bannable as it's opensource and free :) )
