France to tax data transmission from content providers
France voted yesterday to tax content providers €0.05 per gigabyte transmitted. Madness?

Comments
I thought that was funny.
AS IF Google let alone Netflix will pay a tax to the Government let alone the ISPs have to keep track of data usage to whats going to what...
Looks like the commies won the Cold War and surprisingly the Russians are the least-commie country out there.
As usual, telco think they didn't received enough $$$, government rentseek
This never would have happened if US-EU relations hadn't hit rock bottom. In the past, the US used its soft power to nip this kind of legislation in the bud, always fiercely protecting its Big Tech firms.
That's not going to happen though.
is this a robbery?
Yes, taxation is theft.
But also: this is essentially egress pricing on big CDNs/clouds. And fastly's pricing is (digital) highway robbery.
Restrictions and whitelists will soon affect the entire Internet worldwide. These are just the first steps. Local governments will gradually introduce restrictions on dangerous news content and so on. VPN and anonymity are blocked or severely restricted.
Wonder if it also is implied on free services
Aye. Government are more interested in increasing their budget and giving handouts to bottom rung of society. They're not interested with the rest of society who clocked more than 160, 200, 240 hour a month
s/bottom rung of society/themselves/
50 euros per TB is insane for CDNs, especially free CDN like Cloudflare
You are welcome to visit: https://www.fastly.com/pricing
Also free cloudflare will have a thing or two to say to you if you insist on streaming video on the free tier (not that people don't abuse R2 for that....)
I think it's an AND rather than an OR in this case.
Streaming over VPN tax evasion. Lmfao.
I have no clue how damaged one has to be to think about such a thing.
That'll fix it.
Whatever "it" is that they're trying to fix.
This is definitely the fix for it.
Are they this desperate...
You just won't be allowed to use VPN. You will be able to connect, but you will not be able to access certain sites. You can do it without a VPN, but for a fee. All the technologies are already there.
They threaten you with either freedom or money.
The trick is, the government and the public employees are included in the bottom rung of society.
Under John Rawl's,
original frameworkandveil of ignorance, inequalities in a just society should work to the greatest benefit of its least-advantaged members. In this case, the least-advantaged members includes the government and the public servants. It's not a coincidence that both groups could violate laws without impunity.
So first France spends billions on everything for free like education Healthcare and make people addicted.
Now they figure out it's nothing but burden on economy!!??
'twas never sustainable

And into another well-known endless deals, which is always in short supply.
Student protests will lead to tightening the screws.
I’m not going to be a student for much longer, only like 3 weeks left. Is it too late for me to protest?
The lower house, not 'France'. Not every country is like Murica.
zee crazy french
Just to keep things in perspective, at the end of that page, we read:
This is what happens when lawmakers have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.
France economic policy has been obsessed for decades by the belief that the richest create the wealth and in consequence is built to accommodate them. The 'social' narrative hides the inequalities on the ground. If the weakest are feeling weaker it's also because all the governments of all sides who took charge focused on making labor cheaper while the richest 10% saw their share of the total private wealth increase.
