Idler's apocalypse
The time when people can no longer afford idlers is upon us...
I'm not talking about price increases, though they would go up as the costs with the infrastructure acquisition and maintenance (people to take care of updates and track the CVEs) go up, but with the time to set them up and maintain.
If you are like me and you don't maintain a clear list with what you have and from whom, what they are running etc. then you have a problem.
Nobody cares about 12 Eur a year, but if you need to allocate a few hours to take care of one of them, then that is adding up.
From the host's point of view, having unmaintained idlers gathering bots and generating complaints and god knows what else, is also a nightmare, so the model of gathering idlers which use no resources almost and then cash on them for years is no longer a valid plan.
There are a few good things, though.
People will secure them or, at the very list, lock them down when not used for anything or they will come as such from the templates.
The hosts will be more aggressive and proactive watching the traffic. The AI can find the vulnerabilities, but can also be trained to spot patterns and raise flags. You can have "someone" constantly looking at the flows and tell you with a high probability, this and that IP are compromised, shut down to investigate, just like you train a spam filter.
I find a lot of promise in this AI scrutiny, the code running our lives is growing exponentially and the programmers were getting lazy, or the AI did it which is probably worse. We will need to return to good practices, only put online what absolutely has to be online, one VM per app, aggressive firewalling and lock downs, let's face it, we all got lazy, I know I am. Now, he who is without sin, throw the rocks!

Good to see you
how about not putting anything online since yesterday
maybe I am outing myself as a newcomer here, but isn't the whoole 'idler' thing merely a meme? is anyone really doing this? whats the mindset behind it?
people will always find ways to run even more iddlers. Running from e-waste like written off arm hardware like all those old iphone/android devices.
You find a discount that you feel is too good to not buy it. Then you remember you don't have a project for it. Wash and repeat. Especially on black friday or OVH sales, it can be brutal lol.
I wish...
It creates the illusion of owning something rare...
I think I wasted too much on idlers (I know who's reading my comments please don't ask me to transfer those idlers)
Would you like to have a bero-host 1c2g €12/yr idler?
Auto patching still works. Idlers are controlled by ansible so updates are trivial.
