  • It's like an ancient myth, because some countries still teach that 'website' means 'www'.

Those who born before 1987 needs www. prefix. And born before 1960 needs http://www.

  • Use www.

    Redirect to non-www.

Boomers and zoomers alike will find your website.

www. is useful in the sense for session isolation and some security benefits, and there is some benefit regarding how you manage the www cname and CDN stuff, because you can't delegate root resolution since it will break your other service.

  • if cdn is broken or not redirected, www is the only way to access a site. But mostly not happen anymore.
But still sometimes it happens, that a site is only accessible via http instead of https. Then www has no common rule.

domains pre-existed before the web. Back in the 90s, you might be connecting to example.com using various protocols long before anyone had an idea of having a web server. The domain's web services lived on www.example.com

Someone eventually had the bright idea to just drop the www for public-facing stuff.

I remember the first time I saw a domain name in a TV commercial. It was in the format www.example.com. Then later I saw one in which they put http://www.example.com at the bottom of the screen. It was immediately obvious which would catch on. There was a time when announcers would read "visit our web site at hache tee pee pee colon slash slash..."

yanking your chain. it's like someones said above it really depends on your setup. you can't cname the domain when cdn is involved (some circumstances you can depending on cdn but it's their own gimmickry, not standard or legit). otherwise i habitually alias the www to the domain but i have to admit i don't know when i last typed www. into an address bar.

If the non-www domain isn’t configured properly, leaving out www could cause DNS errors, SSL certificate warnings, or a default/404 page.

  • About 20 years ago, there was also the era of www2, when load balancers and CDNs weren't nearly as widespread as they are today.

I still grin when I see a www2 today (anywhere except a landing page for a for-sale domain, that is).

There are a few websites I use in my day job that run www1 through to www-10. And they still run cgi-bin. I'm pretty sure the servers are gray with old age and probably remember fighting the Germans In 1914

I recall that 10+ years ago, one of the burning questions of the day was whether or not www was a subdomain. :) (The answer was yes, but this was often debated)

In any case, www makes sense as a distinguishing marker among other subdomains such as ftp, irc, mail, gopher, etc., each of which indicates the kind of server being accessed

Nowadays, given the overwhelming prevalence of web servers, there's much less need to use www as a distinguishing marker

  • I prefer domain.com over www.domain.com, as the latter looks like a subdomain.

    www = world wide web.

Most people know they are on the internet, so it's kind of unnecessary... unless you are advertising on LES.

mostly because I have 3 extra W and I need to use them everyday if not they will expire and it would be an waste of w's

and because @yoursunny made me, if I don't use them I have to do a naked push-up video

    domain.com is not a FQDN , but www.domain.com is.

simple, try to understand basics of the internet instead of being just another dumb blind "only user" of it.
